The Carolina Panthers Defense Will Be Their Downfall If…

The Carolina Panthers opened their season with a resounding 59-37 defeat to the Chicago Bears at home. 

The opening three quarters were a shootout between two former No. 1 overall picks, Bryce Young and Caleb Williams. Williams has quickly established himself as one of the most electrifying talents in the NFL, and Young has begun coming into his own. 

The Panthers’ defense was completely lifeless all game, allowing 552 yards of total offense and almost 300 rushing yards. Williams picked apart the secondary with relative ease, throwing for 269 yards, two touchdowns and zero interceptions on 72% completion rate. 

The big question for the Panthers coming into the season is how the offense would operate under Bryce Young heading into year four. However, week one completely flipped the narrative, shifting a majority of the focus towards the defense. 

Carolina defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero has had mixed performances and has been scrutinized by fans on more than one occasion since taking the job in 2023. While he has significantly bolstered the defense, games like this highlight why fans vocalize their dislike of Evero. 

With this loss the Panthers have allowed the most 40-point games in the NFL since Evero took over. After an offseason with free agent signings of linebackers Devin Lloyd and Bobby Okereke, and retaining key players Derrick Brown, Jaycee Horn and Mike Jackson this kind of continued performance is unacceptable.  

Young and the rest of the offense have taken a clear step forward with the NFC South wide open for the taking. If the defense continues to lag behind and falter under Evero however, the Panthers’ efforts will be for nothing. 

The Panthers have the chance to bounce back against a weak Atlanta Falcons side that they swept last season. The Falcons only put up 13 points with 238 yards of total offense in week one, throwing two interceptions in the process. 

If Carolina’s defense fails to hold the Falcons then it may be time to move on from Evero before the season fully gets underway.
