The case for Aaron Rodgers playing for Jets again in 2023

New York Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers, sidelined since September following an Achilles injury, inches closer to a 2023 comeback. Per multiple reports, he could return to practice this week with the intent of playing against the Washington Commanders on Dec. 24.

Following Rodgers' injury four plays into the season, the Jets attempted to stay afloat with Zach Wilson, who flopped (again) at quarterback. At 4-7, New York's playoff hopes are all but over. 

Although Rodgers likely won't be able to save the team's season, his return could be extremely important for other reasons. 

Amid a lost season, a Rodgers comeback would mean a lot to his teammates. Days after a crushing Black Friday loss to the Dolphins, he made a full-time return to the practice facility, raising teammates' spirits.

Guard Laken Tomlinson called Rodgers' return a "motivator," per the New York Post.

Most importantly, if Rodgers were to play again this season, his two or three starts could serve as a gauge for where he and the team stand for 2024 and beyond. 

Per The Athletic, Jets owner Woody Johnson appears content entering next season with the same head coach (Robert Saleh), offensive coordinator (Nathaniel Hackett) and GM (Joe Douglas). If Rodgers returns and New York's bottom-ranked offense plays better than it has in his absence, the billionaire owner would gain reassurance the current regime can win. 

If Rodgers were to struggle in the system he's routinely spoken highly of, however, changes would likely come among the aforementioned trio. New York also could pivot to drafting a quarterback in the QB-rich 2024 NFL Draft. Gang Green owns the No. 8 pick, per Tankathon, but could continue to ascend in the draft order if losses pile up.

Of course, both the Jets and Rodgers must weigh the potential risks versus rewards.

If he reinjures his Achilles in a meaningless game, team brass may have a hard time justifying his presence on the roster. At Rodgers' age — he turns 40 Saturday — another significant injury would likely mark the end to his stellar career. 

Regardless, Rodgers will ultimately have the final say on whether or not he returns this season.
