The case for the Jets to acquire frustrated All-Pro WR Davante Adams

Following the offseason acquisition of four-time NFL MVP Aaron Rodgers, the New York Jets added several of the quarterback's former teammates with the Green Bay Packers. Should New York make a push for another one, disgruntled Davante Adams of the Las Vegas Raiders — one of Rodgers' all-time favorite targets?

On Wednesday, several days after Las Vegas' 21-17 win over the New England Patriots, Adams expressed his frustration with his role in the offense. The All-Pro wide receiver had two catches for 29 yards in the victory and has six receptions on nine targets over his past two games.

"I'm a human being, and I have extremely high standards for myself in this offense," Adams said, per ESPN’s Paul Gutierrez. "When you're a player like me, mentally, my benchmark is not wins and losses — it's greatness. So when I go out there, I expect to be able to have that ability to put that on tape and have an influence on the game. That's my purpose for being here. I'm not here just to hang out; I came here to win and to do it the right way."

Nobody understands Adams' displeasure better than Rodgers, who spent eight years throwing to the six-time Pro Bowler in Green Bay.

"Davante's always open," Rodgers said on "The Pat McAfee Show" following Las Vegas' 17-13 win over the Packers on Oct. 9. "The facts are what Davante Adams does at the line of scrimmage, what Davante does down the field, is like no one else can do. You have to give him opportunities."

Rodgers has often compared New York's No. 1 receiver — Garrett Wilson — to Adams. On the heels of winning the AP Offensive Rookie of the Year Award last season, Wilson has once again cemented himself as quarterback Zach Wilson's favorite target. The 23-year-old has amassed 369 yards receiving on 32 receptions — 18 more than the next-closest Jets wide receiver.

After Wilson, New York's wide receiver room drops off significantly in talent. Free-agent acquisitions Allen Lazard and Randall Cobb have combined for just 17 catches this season. Meanwhile, Corey Davis (retirement) and Mecole Hardman (trade to Chiefs) have left the team.

The Jets have the money and draft capital to acquire Adams. Rodgers agreed to a $35 million pay cut to play for Gang Green in the hopes his team would use the cash to bolster the roster. New York also has its 2024 first-round pick, which was set to go to the Packers if Rodgers played 65% of the snaps this season. He lasted all of four before his injury.

Adams, however, may pump the brakes on reuniting with his former quarterback, who is sidelined for the season barring a stunning comeback from his Achilles injury. With Zach Wilson as a game-manager QB, Adams probably would not see a significant jump in targets for the Jets, who feature a ground-and-pound offense.

Regardless, the Jets could use a wide receiver. The trade deadline is Oct. 31. New York should at least give the Raiders a call.
