The Chicago Bears have an opportunity to bring back one of the most dominant defensive players to wear their uniform in recent history.
Khalil Mack spent four seasons in Chicago from 2018 through 2021, becoming one of the faces of the franchise and helping transform the Bears into one of the NFL’s most feared defenses.
Now 35 years old, Mack is still proving he can make an impact.
With Chicago looking to build a championship contender around Caleb Williams, bringing Mack back could give the defense another experienced pass rusher and a leader who already understands what it means to play in Chicago.
Despite entering his 13th NFL season, Mack continues to show why he remains one of the league’s most respected defenders.
Through six games in 2026, Mack has recorded 19 tackles and three sacks for the Los Angeles Chargers.
During the 2025 season, he finished with 32 tackles, 5.5 sacks, and four forced fumbles despite appearing in only 12 games because of an elbow injury.
His most impressive recent season came in 2023, when he recorded a career high 17 sacks.
While Mack is no longer in his prime, his ability to pressure quarterbacks and force turnovers remains valuable.
Chicago would not need him to carry the entire defense. Instead, he could provide another reliable pass rushing option while bringing veteran leadership to the locker room.
Bears fans remember exactly what happened when Chicago acquired Mack from the Oakland Raiders before the 2018 season.
He immediately became the centerpiece of one of the NFL’s best defenses.
During his first season in Chicago, Mack recorded 12.5 sacks and six forced fumbles while helping the Bears finish 12 and 4 and win the NFC North.
He earned first team All Pro honors and finished second in Defensive Player of the Year voting.
Although Chicago never made a deep postseason run during his tenure, Mack’s impact was undeniable.
Bringing him back would give Bears fans an opportunity to see one of their former defensive stars finish his career where he enjoyed some of his greatest success.
Mack is currently playing on a one year, $18 million fully guaranteed contract with the Chargers.
That means Chicago would have to acquire him through a trade rather than simply signing him in free agency during the 2026 season.
His age, contract, and potential trade compensation would all need to be considered.
The Bears should not sacrifice premium draft capital for a player approaching the end of his career.
However, if Los Angeles became willing to move Mack for a reasonable return, Chicago should explore the opportunity.
I believe bringing Mack back to Chicago would be a smart move if the price is right.
The Bears are trying to build a team capable of competing with the NFC’s best, and adding another experienced pass rusher could help them take that next step.
Mack brings leadership, postseason experience, and the ability to make game changing plays.
He also understands the expectations that come with playing for the Chicago Bears.
This would not be about recreating the 2018 defense. It would be about adding a proven veteran who can still contribute.
With Mack scheduled to become a free agent in 2027, Chicago must decide whether a trade now would be worth the investment.
If the Chargers are willing to listen, the Bears should make the call.
Bringing Khalil Mack back home could be exactly the type of move Chicago needs to strengthen its defense.
