The Cowboys quarterback room changed this year, and there's already a tough decision waiting to be made by Brian Schottenheimer

We all know Dak Prescott is the starting quarterback of the Dallas Cowboys. But what will the rest of the quarterback room look like during the 2025 NFL season?

As we count down the days until training camp in Oxnard, California, we're looking at every position on the team and predicting who's in and who's out of the 53-man roster

Let's start by looking at the main characters: The quarterbacks.

The Cowboys quarterbacks on the 90-man roster

  • Dak Prescott
  • Joe Milton
  • Will Grier

What we heard from Cowboys OTAs, minicamp: Milton leads as QB2

Joe Milton had highs and lows during the early phases of the Cowboys' offseason but one thing became clear: The backup job is his to lose

When the Cowboys traded for Trey Lance, he failed to overtake Cooper Rush in the depth chart order. That's not the case with Milton, who is winning the battle against Grier. Though the young quarterback made mistakes in OTAs and minicamp, he did look in rhythm and had more than one sharp practice.

At one point in practice, he rolled left and delivered a bullet touchdown pass to Ryan Flournoy. He made impressive deep shots and even finished one team period with a 10-of-10 completion streak.

Milton has a lot to prove in training camp but he's in the driver's seat of this quarterback competition.

53-man roster spotlight: Can Grier make a case for a spot on the team?

The biggest question about this position for me is whether or not the Cowboys will opt to carry three quarterbacks on the 53-man roster. It's a tough decision waiting to be made by Brian Schottenheimer.

In recent years, they did under Mike McCarthy. But the context is different. In Cooper Rush, they had a gameday ready quarterback who had been playing the same scheme for years. He had the experience Lance lacked. Yet, it made sense to keep the three quarterbacks because the latter had the upside.

Now, I'm not so sure things are similar. Milton is raw but not as much as Lance was and Grier isn't the gameday-ready backup Rush was, mostly because he hasn't been working the scheme for years.

Final prediction

IN: Dak Prescott, Joe Milton
OUT: Will Grier

I'd be surprised if the Cowboys carry Grier on the 53-man roster. It will ultimately come down to what other position groups look like. The team has many young players worthy of fighting for the final spots that could be more significant to the team for depth and special team purposes.

It also isn't crazy to think the Cowboys can sneak Grier into their practice squad.
