The Dallas Cowboys like to say player acquisition is a 365-day business. The reality isn't quite that, however, it does mean the front office could still add talent before the season starts.
Training camp is under a month away though. That means if the Cowboys want to make an impactful addition, the time is running out. You don't want to make it to Oxnard, California without players you expect to be highly important.
Well, the Cowboys were named potential trade suitors for a couple of players that could change the outlook of the 2025 NFL season.
As of today, the Cowboys don't have anyone resembling a recently productive or proven NFL running back. They count with veterans Javonte Williams and Miles Sanders, who have failed to average four yards per attempt in the last two years. They also have a couple of Day 3 rookies in Jaydon Blue and Phil Mafah. And of course, Deuce Vaughn.
What if they land a well-established running back, though? Bleacher Report recently named the Cowboys potential trade suitors for two different players at the position.
Harris isn't the elite running back we thought he was earlier in his career but he has been more productive than any player on the Cowboys' depth chart as of today.
He's passed 1,000 rushing yards every one of his seasons and has averaged four yards per attempt in each of the last two seasons while adding a minimum six touchdowns every year. Not elite numbers but considering they happened in a questionable offense helps.
At minimum, he would be someone the Cowboys could rely on to be a workhorse, which they don't have right now.
The challenge about trading for Harris is the Chargers just got him this offseason. It might be a possibility considering L.A. drafted Omarion Hampton in the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft.
At the end of the day though, I'm not sure the Chargers want to part ways with him even with Hampton on board. They wouldn't get much in return.
Etienne would fit the Cowboys' trend of trading for first-round players though I'm not sure how much he moves the needle. Entering a contract year, Etienne's most impressive stat is he averaged 5.1 yards per attempt as a rookie in 2022. He also scored 12 touchdowns a year later.
But for back to back seasons, he has also failed to average four yards per attempt. There's some low-risk, high-reward aspect to getting him but we'll see if the Jaguars—who drafted running backs in 2023 and 2025—are willing to part ways with him.
These aren't necessarily Pro Bowl players we're talking about (though Najee does have a Pro Bowl season to his name), but the Cowboys need any help they can get right now.
And if any of these two join Dallas, I'd call it an upgrade.
