The Dolphins could use Sunday's contest against the Chargers to their advantage in an unexpected way as trying season presses onward amid a new report

The Miami Dolphins' offensive backfield belongs to De'Von Achane. There's little room for misinterpretation on that front. Miami gets Achane plenty of work as a pass catch to supplement his work running the football — assuming Miami is willing to commit to the run, that is. That wasn't the case this past Sunday against the Carolina Panthers, but the team's Week 6 matchup against the Los Angeles Chargers brings a new opportunity to find traction on the ground.

And, thanks to a new report from NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, Sunday's game against the Chargers offers more than one opportunity for the offensive backfield — it may offer a chance to talk some business with a fellow AFC team amid their search for help via trade.

Dolphins should use proximity to Chargers on Sunday to gauge interest in RB Jaylen Wright after Saturday report

"The Los Angeles Chargers placed a second running back on injured reserve this past week, and that position is expected to be a focus for them with the Nov. 4 trade deadline less than a month away.

The Chargers have been calling teams for running back help, canvassing the league for either a depth piece or a starter, sources say."

One would have to assume getting to spend some time in the same stadium as the Chargers on Sunday afternoon would certainly offer a pristine opportunity to gauge interest in a young running back that once presented plenty of promise as a mid-round draft choice in the form of Jaylen Wright. Wright, who Miami drafted in 2024, has been bypassed by Ollie Gordon II in Miami's backfield but has three years left on his rookie contract and fresh legs.

Running back Jaylen Wright's Miami Dolphins career

  • Drafted 120th overall in the 2024 NFL Draft out of Tennessee
  • Dolphins traded further third-round draft choice to acquire pick needed to draft Wright
  • Rushed 68 times for 249 rushing yards as a rookie in 2024
  • Suffered preseason injury in 2025 and has not logged a carry thus far this season

Wright's market will almost certainly be limited due to averaging less than four yards per carry as a rookie and his inability to log snaps in Miami's backfield. But the Dolphins are close enough to his pre-draft process to potentially garner some appeal for Wright.

There's no question the athletic profile is that of a potential home run hitter at the NFL level. But Gordon II has become the thunder to De'Von Achane's lightning and, as such, totes of the rock are hard to come by. It certainly wouldn't hurt to see if there's any interest when the Chargers are visiting Hard Rock Stadium on Sunday afternoon for the Week 6 matchup between Los Angeles and Miami.
