The Philadelphia Eagles pulled off a rare Super Bowl blowout on Sunday, destroying the Kansas City Chiefs in a game that seemed to be over before fans gathered into their seats in New Orleans.
In a game that got out of hand so quickly with several key plays, it was difficult to name the most valuable player.
Voters settled on Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts, a deserved winner after a three touchdown performance in the big game.
Hurts walked away with the MVP, but days after the Super Bowl, we now have the full voting results for the award.
Of the 20 total votes cast for Super Bowl MVP, Hurts received 12. Pass rusher Josh Sweat received 4.5 votes, while rookie defensive back Cooper DeJean earned 3.5 votes.
According to Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio, many of the Hurts voters considered casting a vote for a defensive player, but they ultimately felt that no individual defensive player captured the extent of the Eagles' full performance on that side of the ball.
Sweat finished with 2.5 sacks on Patrick Mahomes, part of a six-sack effort by the Philadelphia defense. DeJean scored with a pick-six, but ultimately came short of making history as the first rookie to win Super Bowl MVP.
“That kid in me always kept working at this, and I stayed true to his vision, but it really all began with great leadership and those who set examples for me,” Hurts said after the game, reflecting on winning his first Super Bowl and the MVP award.
“It’s been a long journey, it’s a journey of ups and downs and highs and lows. I’ve always stayed true to myself and have this vision of being the best that I can be, and that evolved, over time, into this desire to win. You don’t do great things without having good guys around you. The effort, sticking to the script, and always trusting the process is what got us here.”
Hurts ended Super Bowl 59 with two passing touchdowns and an additional score on the ground. He completed 17 of his 22 passes and rushed for 72 yards in Sunday's win, joining Nick Foles as the only Super Bowl MVPs in Eagles franchise history.
