The Indianapolis Colts’ Most Important Training Camp Battle

What is the Indianapolis Colts’ most important training camp battle? According to ESPN’s Stephen Holder, it’s quarterback (Anthony Richardson vs. Daniel Jones):

“Rarely do we see an open competition between two quarterbacks who have previously been starters, but Anthony Richardson Sr. and Daniel Jones are said to have an equal shot at the job in Indy.

Richardson’s status as the team’s 2023 fourth overall pick might give him an edge, so Jones presumably needs to take the job from him. It’s difficult to argue that that has happened thus far, with both passers showing the inconsistency that has plagued their careers. But coach Shane Steichen said he’s willing to take his time reaching a decision, so this one could linger until the end of the preseason.”

Indy has several training camp battles going on. For example, Khalil Herbert and DJ Giddens are battling for the No. 2 running back spot. Plus, Tanor Bortolini and Danny Pinter are fighting for the starting center job.

However, no Colts battle is bigger than Anthony Richardson vs. Daniel Jones. As everybody knows, quarterback is the most well-known position in football.

Anthony Richardson: The “Future Superstar” Who Hasn’t Become a Superstar Yet

The Colts used a top-five pick to select Richardson. When a quarterback is drafted that high, he’s supposed to become the face of the franchise. Unfortunately, that hasn’t happened yet.

Due to injury, Richardson played only four games as a rookie. The Colts hoped he’d have a breakout year last season. But that wasn’t the case. Richardson missed time again with injuries and was benched temporarily in favor of Joe Flacco. He also struggled mightily as a passer when he did play.

Sure, Richardson hasn’t had a glamorous beginning to his career. It isn’t the end of the world, though. He can still turn things around this season and play like a superstar. He, of course, must stay healthy and become a lot more accurate as a passer.

Will Jones Steal Richardson’s Job?

Indianapolis Colts quarterback Daniel Jones (17) throws the ball Tuesday, June 10, 2025, during NFL Colts mandatory mini camp at the Indiana Farm Bureau Football Center in Indianapolis.

Like Richardson, Jones was a top-10 pick. He was drafted by the New York Giants sixth overall in 2019. And also like Richardson, he has had a disappointing career thus far.

Jones did have a solid year in 2022. He threw for 3,205 yards and 15 touchdowns while rushing for 708 yards and seven scores. The former Duke star also led the Giants to a playoff victory. For his efforts, he received a massive $160 million contract extension.

Yet, Jones tore his ACL in 2023. Then last season, he was benched and subsequently released by the Giants. Jones later signed with the Minnesota Vikings. He never played a game with the Vikings as he sat behind starter Sam Darnold.

It won’t be shocking if Jones beats out Richardson for the starting job. If so, he could revive his career in Indianapolis and return to his 2022 form.

Who Will Win?

Richardson started the preseason opener against the Baltimore Ravens. Unfortunately, his night ended early after suffering a dislocated finger. Thankfully, he isn’t expected to miss much time. Jones replaced him and completed 10 of his 21 passes for 144 yards.

Like Holder wrote, Richardson and Jones are said to have an equal shot at the job. Look for Richardson to ultimately win. But it remains to be seen whether he’ll be the starter all season long.
