‘The Jet’: Former Cleveland Browns WR Dies In Auto Accident: Report

A former wide receiver for the Cleveland Browns died in an automobile accident on Sunday, per multiple reports. The player tragically died at 33 years old.

Per Scooby Axson of USA Today, Chandler Jones died on Sunday after he was hit in a highway incident in Los Angeles.

“Jones − nicknamed ‘the Jet’ from his time at Bishop Montgomery High School in Torrance, California and with the Spartans − was hit by a Toyota RAV4 near an off-ramp on California State Route 90 at about 2 a.m. Sunday morning, and was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the California Highway Patrol,” Jones wrote.

“The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s office said that Jones died from blunt traumatic injuries.”

Jones played four years of college football at San Jose State, recording 248 receptions for 3,087 yards (the second-most receiving yards in program history) and 29 touchdowns. He returned to the program as a graduate assistant in 2017.

Following news of Jones’ death, the SJSU program posted a message on X.

“Forever in our hearts, #89 In loving memory of Spartan wide receiver and coach, Chandler Jones,” they wrote.

Following his successful career at San Jose State, where he earned first-team All-Mountain West honors in 2013, Jones was initially signed as an undrafted free agent with the Cleveland Browns on May 12, 2014. He spent time with the Indianapolis Colts before finishing his NFL career with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

He had a brief in the CFL as a member of the Montreal Alouettes practice squad.
