The last undefeated NFL teams of the past 30 years

This slideshow chronicles the final NFL team to remain unbeaten in each of the last 30 NFL seasons. Some teams have gotten close to the undefeated 1972 Miami Dolphins, but it hasn't happened yet.

L.A.'s dominant offense helped it break out to an 8-0 start before losing to the Saints, 45-35, on the road. The Rams finished the regular season 13-3 and were able to get revenge on the Saints in the NFC championship game before losing, 13-3, to the Patriots in the Super Bowl.

The Chiefs shocked the world with a 42-27 win over the defending Super Bowl champion Patriots on the road in Week 1. The great offense would continue through their 5-0 start before losing to Pittsburgh in Week 6. Quarterback Alex Smith and Co. had an up-and-down year, but the Chiefs claimed their second consecutive AFC West title. They later disappointed in the playoffs yet again with a 22-21 loss to the Titans in the wild-card round after leading 21-3 at halftime.

2016: Minnesota Vikings, 5-0

The Vikings headed into their bye week at 5-0 after facing major scrutiny at the beginning of the year with quarterback Teddy Bridgewater suffering a catastrophic knee injury and the team trading for Sam Bradford. They'd lose their following four games after the bye, as their offense started to sputter, and they would eventually miss the playoffs at 8-8.

Despite an offense of limited weapons, quarterback Cam Newton and a stout defense helped the Panthers to an improbable 14-0 record with an eye toward an undefeated regular season, before losing to the Falcons in Week 16 and ending the season at 15-1. They made it all the way to the Super Bowl where they lost to the Denver Broncos.

2014: Cardinals, Eagles, Bengals, 3-0

The quest to go undefeated was halted early in 2014, with no team managing to go 4-0. Of the final undefeateds, Arizona and Cincinnati lost in the wild-card round of the playoffs, while Philadelphia didn't even make the postseason.

Fresh off a 2-14 season in 2013 and the first overall draft choice, an easy early schedule and new head coach Andy Reid led a great turnaround for the Chiefs. Kansas City faltered late in the year with a tougher schedule and injury to defensive stalwart Justin Houston, finishing 11-5 and losing to the Colts in the wild-card round.

2012: Atlanta Falcons, 8-0

Green Bay was primed for an undefeated regular season when it rolled into Kansas City, but the Chiefs put up a fight with midseason acquisition Kyle Orton at quarterback. The Packers still finished the season 15-1 before getting upset by the Giants in the divisional round of the playoffs.

2010 was the first time a team didn't get to 4-0 since 1970. All three teams that managed 3-0 made the playoffs, with the Steelers eventually losing to Green Bay in the Super Bowl.

Head coach Jim Caldwell's first season at the helm, taking over for Tony Dungy, was off to a great start, with his team starting 14-0. The Colts lost the last two games of the season after clinching the top seed in the playoffs, but they got back on track in the playoffs. Favored in the Super Bowl, the Colts lost to Sean Payton's Saints.

Led by Kerry Collins at quarterback, the Titans started the season 10-0. Their balanced running attack was difficult to stop, with Chris Johnson and LenDale White combining to rush for more than 2,000 yards and 24 touchdowns. The team slowed down the stretch, going 3-3 before losing to Baltimore in the divisional round of the playoffs.

With just one more step in their quest for a perfect season, the Patriots entered Super Bowl XLII as 12-point favorites vs. the Giants. The Patriots' historic offense had blown out nearly every opponent, but the Giants' pass rush and a miracle Eli Manning to David Tyree pass helped the Giants pull off the 17-14 upset.

For the second straight year, the Colts were the final undefeated team but lost to the Cowboys to end their winning streak. They ended the season on a 3-4 skid, failing to secure a bye in the playoffs. It didn't matter, as the team ran the table in the playoffs to win Super Bowl XLI.

The Colts' great start had the 1972 Dolphins nervous, but the undefeated season was halted in Week 15 by the Chargers. Despite securing the top seed in the playoffs after finishing 14-2, the Colts lost to Pittsburgh in the divisional round of the playoffs.

Andy Reid's Eagles had a balanced team, starting the year 7-0 and securing the top seed in the NFC. The Eagles made it all the way to the Super Bowl, before losing to the Patriots, 24-21, in Super Bowl XXXIX.

The AFC West rivals Raiders and Chargers lost their undefeated seasons in the same week. The Rams had high hopes for a turnaround with key offensive additions, including quarterback Trent Green and running back Marshall Faulk. Green's knee injury in the preseason literally had head coach Dick Vermeil in tears, but a former Arena League quarterback named Kurt Warner came to the rescue and helped create the "Greatest Show on Turf." The Rams finished the regular season 13-3 and were triumphant in Super Bowl XXXIV when linebacker Mike Jones made a touchdown-saving tackle to end the game.

1998: Denver Broncos, 13-0

The Broncos really had the 1972 Dolphins nervous with their hot start. The Giants were able to halt Denver's undefeated season, but the Broncos still won the Super Bowl as quarterback John Elway rode off into the sunset in his final season.

The Broncos started the year as the final undefeated team but didn't even win their division, finishing one game behind the Chiefs in the AFC West. Denver got the last laugh, winning Super Bowl XXXII over Green Bay as 11-point underdogs.

The end result for the final three undefeated teams in 1995 couldn't have been more different. Miami finished 9-7 before losing in the wild-card round of the playoffs. The Rams faltered after winning their first four games in their first season in St. Louis, finishing 7-9. Dallas finished the regular season 12-4 and won Super Bowl XXX.

A balanced Chargers squad started the year 6-0 before losing to Denver but still managed to make the Super Bowl. Of course, it was one to forget for Chargers fans, with the team losing, 49-26, to the 49ers as 18.5 point underdogs.

1993: New Orleans Saints, 5-0

Despite being the final undefeated team, the Saints went only 3-8 over their last 11 games and missed the playoffs. The team's offense sputtered, with starting quarterback Wade Wilson throwing more interceptions than touchdowns for the year.

This version of the Dolphins wasn't exactly making the Miami team from 20 years earlier nervous, but it had an impressive offense with Dan Marino throwing for more than 4,100 yards. Miami finished the regular season 11-5 and lost in the AFC conference championship to Buffalo.

The top two teams in the NFC shared 10-0 records before falling. San Francisco lost to the Rams, 28-17, but finished the regular season 14-2. New York's win streak ended on the road at Philadelphia, 31-13, followed by a 7-3 loss at San Francisco the following week. The Giants finished the year 13-3 but got the last laugh, beating the 49ers 15-13 in the NFC championship and then upsetting the Bills in Super Bowl XXV due to Scott Norwood's infamous failed field goal.

The Rams broke out of the gates quickly in a year of streaks. Their five-game winning streak was ended at Buffalo in a 23-20 loss in Week 6. Los Angeles would lose four straight games and then right the ship with another four-game winning streak late in the year. The team finished the regular season 11-5 and made it to the NFC championship where they were blown out by the 49ers, 30-3.
