The Dan Campbell-Brad Holmes era of the Detroit Lions has been all about exercising demons. Doing the things the "same old Lions" couldn't.
On Monday, the Lions exercised their latest demon, finally conquering the Baltimore Ravens mere weeks before the 20-year anniversary of their last victory over them. Back then, Joey Harrington was starting at QB for the Lions while Anthony Wright was starting for the Ravens.
It's a far cry from where the Lions and Ravens are now as both franchises have spent the past 15-plus years among the most consistent at the QB position. The Lions have benefited from years of Matthew Stafford and Jared Goff, while the Ravens have benefited from Joe Flacco and Lamar Jackson.
While the Lions can now say they're one of the three NFC franchises that have beaten Jackson, he wasn't the only Ravens QB to give the Lions trouble. On Sunday, the Lions will have a chance to defeat Flacco, who now leads the Cleveland Browns.
Sunday will mark the fourth time the Lions will face off against Flacco, assuming the Browns stick with him as their starter. The Lions missed out on their chance to face him last season as he was benched for Anthony Richardson while with the Indianapolis Colts in a game the Lions won 24-6.
Flacco is 3-0 in his starts against the Lions, with his first start coming in 2009 in a 48-3 pummelling that saw the Ravens amass a staggering 308 rushing yards thanks to great offensive line play. Flacco would be victorious against the Lions again in 2013 and 2017. Flacco's numbers in those games aren't eye-popping by any means. He only had three touchdown passes to zero interceptions, and averaged 240.33 yards passing with a 59.57% completion percentage.
Of course, wins are above all else a team stat, and it's tough to defeat a Flacco-led team scoring only 13 points on average to his Ravens' 36.67. However, it's no longer 2017; it's 2025, and the once young Super Bowl MVP is now 40. 13 points may be enough to win on Sunday.
Flacco's numbers weren't good in their Sunday victory over the previously undefeated Green Bay Packers. Flacco completed 58.3% of his passes for 142 yards. Flacco recorded no TDs and one interception.
The Browns' defense and special teams came up big to erase a late 10-point deficit to win 13-10. Flacco currently leads the league in pass attempts with 126, but has only two TD passes to four INTs. The Browns have averaged 15.33 points per game this season, second-worst in the league.
To finally defeat Flacco, the Lions' secondary will need to avoid Flacco turning back the clock. Keeping the Browns out of the endzone sounds obvious, but keeping them out of field goal range is key, too. Lions fans remember Flacco's second victory over the Lions all too well, as the Ravens scored just 18 points, all on field goals, to win 18-16.
The Lions' offense will have its work cut out for them on Sunday with the Browns' elite defense. So long as the Lions' defense prevents Flacco from playing elite, himself, another demon may soon be exercised.
