The NFL trade deadline is less than 24 hours away, and we don't know what the Lions are going to do at this point. What we do know is that there have been reports that they've been on the lookout for a safety and a defensive lineman. We'll have to wait and see what they do on the defensive line, but a safety just presented himself.
On Monday, the Browns and Kazee had a mutual split that made him a free agent. The veteran safety is in his ninth season, and in that time, he's been with the Browns, Falcons, Cowboys, and Steelers. He's been more of a deth piece in recent years, but in 2018, he led the league in interceptions as a starter for the Falcons.
Safety may not seem like it makes a ton of sense for the Lions right now, but we don't know how bad Kerby Joseph's injury is that's kept him out of the last two games is and here are some real questions with the depth beyond that. The Vikings attacked Thomas Harper on Sunday, Jammie Robinson is pretty inexperienced, and Avonte Maddox is better in the corner spot. So it makes sense to find some better depth. On top of being a solid depth safety, the Lions could also get some special teams use out of him.
Kazee might normally be a player the Lions would have to trade for. In this case, the Lions could just pick him up as a free agent and probaly do it for pretty cheap. It's not the most exciting move Detroit can make, but it's a sensible move for a guy at a position they've been reportedly looking to fill.
