'The Most Obvious Candidate;' Green Bay Packers See NFL Analyst Encourage Team to Trade a Jordan Love Favorite

The Green Bay Packers surprised a great many people, including their own fans, when they selected wide receiver Matthew Golden with the 23rd overall pick in the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft. It was the first time since 2002 (Javon Walker) that Green Bay had taken a wide receiver in the first round. Furthermore, the Packers also used their third round pick on another wide receiver, Savion Williams, in the third round.

Even though Christian Watson is going to (presumably) miss the start of the season as he recovers from a torn ACL, Green Bay has a plethora of wide receivers competing for jobs and snaps. Earlier this week, it was reported that the Packers had signed Sam Brown Jr., an undrafted free agent and former teammate of Williams’ during their college days at Houston.

With his addition, Green Bay’s wide receiver room currently looks like this:

Obviously, not everyone is going to make the team, and those that do may not get the number of targets that they did in the past. This plethora of riches in the wide receiver room has led many to state that the Packers should consider trading one of them.

Bill Barnwell Says the Green Bay Packers Should Trade Romeo Doubs

Every offseason, ESPN’s Bill Barnwell writes a “superlatives” article in which he gives each team a “Most Likely to…” designation. This year, he deemed the Packers as the team “most likely to have a logjam at wide receiver.”

Towards the end of his section discussing Green Bay’s pass catchers, Barnwell argued that the team should look into trading one of them, and his choice is Romeo Doubs.

“Doubs seems like the most obvious candidate, given that he was already suspended for one week by the team last season for missing a pair of practices. Owed $3.4 million in the final year of his rookie deal, the Packers might rack up a compensatory pick if he leaves after the season as a free agent, but Gutekunst has been relatively aggressive adding options such as Jacobs, Xavier McKinney and Nate Hobbs over the past couple of offseasons.

“Dealing Doubs would lock in draft compensation and avoid a potential headache if he falls down the depth chart during the season.”

Doubs has, indeed, been the subject of trade chatter a great deal this offseason, even among Packers fans. However, it is very unlikely that Green Bay will move on from him in that manner.

Green Bay Packers Wide Receiver Romeo Doubs Has Good Chemistry with Jordan Love

When the Packers first traded Aaron Rodgers ahead of the 2023 NFL Draft to make way for Jordan Love as the starting quarterback, Doubs hopped on a plane and flew to California to start working with his new starting quarterback.

In 2023, Love’s first year as the starter, it was Doubs who received the most targets on the team (96). Last year, was third on the team with 72 targets. Reed led the team with 76 and Wicks had 75. Doubs played in four less games than both of them.

Clearly, he is held in high regard by Love, which in and of itself is reason enough not to trade him. However, there are two other things to consider that also support keeping Doubs, at least through the end of his rookie contract.

The first of these is that he is one of just four wide receivers in franchise history to have 100+ receptions, 1,000+ receiving yards, and 10+ touchdowns through his first two NFL seasons. James Lofton and Sterling Sharpe were the first two accomplish the feat. They are both in the Hall of Fame.

Doubs was the third to reach these marks, doing so in 2023. Reed accomplished the feat last year.

The second is this: of all the wide receivers drafted in 2022, the year the Packers, took Doubs, he has the most touchdown receptions (tied with Drake London) with 15. Watson, interestingly, is second with 14.

There is a real possibility that the Packers will not bring Doubs back following this upcoming season as he reaches free agency for the first time in his career. But, for now, he is still a valuable part of their offense.
