The New York Giants Are Rich in Embarrassment

It was early in the game, but the New York Giants were driving down the field, and we’re in 1st and Goal range. The Washington Commanders were up 7-0 so far, but the Giants’ offense looked competent and willing to score a touchdown to tie the ballgame up.

For the third year in a row, they did not score a single touchdown in the first half of week one. The crazy part is that it happened after a Washington penalty on 4th and Goal. Seven tries? Seven failed attempts.

As a matter of fact, for the third year in a row, they did not score a touchdown in the season opener. They join a list that includes the Detroit Lions of the 1940s and franchises that no longer exist, making them the only franchises to do so.

The crazy part is, the Giants had three more opportunities to score a TD after a Washington penalty on 4th and Goal. Seven tries? Seven failed attempts.

For Giants fans, though, this is nothing new. The team’s lack of performance has been the sad reality since the team won Super Bowl XLVI in 2012.

For years, many fans bemoaned and were outright disgusted by Daniel Jones, the player. The former Giants quarterback, who was granted a huge contract instead of running back Saquon Barkley, drew the ire of fans due to his tendency to get injured and, when healthy, appear miserable.

Barkley left the Giants last year and was immediately rewarded with a Super Bowl ring. Jones, in his first start for the Indianapolis Colts, looked like Peyton Manning in 2004 as the Colts punished the Miami Dolphins 33-8. Russell Wilson looked like Jones when he played for Big Blue.

NFL commentator Dan Orlovsky has said, “It’s not the play call, it’s when you call the play.” If Orlovsky, a former NFL quarterback himself, is correct, then Giants Head Coach Brian Daboll does not know when to call the right plays for Wilson to run.

The Giants may not have turned the ball over or had costly penalties, which killed the Giants of the past few seasons, but the offense’s lack of ability to get past midfield was nothing new. As offensive gurus such as Kansas City Chiefs Head Coach Andy Reid, who spends his summer drawing up plays. Commanders’ offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury showed Giants fans what a creative offense looks like on the touchdown Deebo Samuel ran to seal the game.

The loss wasn’t just on Daboll or Wilson. Once again, the Giants’ offensive line was moribund. The line, which no general manager has gotten right since Ernie Acorsi retired 19 years ago. The secondary gave up huge plays on 2nd down, setting the Commanders up for another first down or 3rd and short yardage.

The lone bright spot was the defense’s front seven pressuring Commanders’ QB Jayden Daniels. Brian Burns recorded two sacks, and Kayvon Thibodeaux and rookie Abdul Carter shared a sack. Carter finished with the highest grade from Pro Football Focus, on the team’s defense, with an 81.5.

Also, Malike Nabers, the second-year wide receiver, looked great when Wilson was able to get him the ball, and he could catch it. At multiple points during the game, the young receiver and the Head Coach were caught on camera arguing. Nabers cited a lack of energy on the sidelines.

Nabers wasn’t wrong. He constantly implores to anyone who will listen that he wants to win. Although he dropped passes, he was either doubled or could not get any quick space to get open. Someone on this team has a desire to win, at least.

End Of My New York Giants Rant

Going into the season, Giants fans were hopeful despite having the toughest schedule in the league. As long as the team was competitive and the offense looked competent, losses could be forgiven. The passing game sputtered out, and the running game was absolutely nonexistent. The secondary, who was seen as the defense’s weak point, gave up huge plays continuously.

It’s the same old Giants. Everyone should expect more of the same next week against Dallas.
