The one bright spot for a dismal season in Green Bay

Christian Watson is showing promise after a rough start to his rookie season.

Against Dallas and Tennessee, Watson shifted the conversation surrounding his development as the team's highest-drafted wide receiver in the Aaron Rodgers era. He was drafted 34th overall in the 2022 NFL Draft. Per data from Pro-Football-Reference, Jordy Nelson (2008) is the next highest-drafted wide receiver at 36th overall.

In the opening two months of the season, Watson had 10 catches for 88 yards and no touchdowns. He has eight catches for 155 yards and five touchdowns in a span of five days.

The stretch began with a three-touchdown performance against the Cowboys that gave the Packers a brief glimmer of hope that the team's five-game losing streak was a mirage. Green Bay defeated Dallas 31-28 in overtime.

The scoring continued Thursday against Tennessee. Green Bay (4-7) lost to Tennessee (7-3), 27-17. Watson was not the problem.

He was targeted six times and had four receptions for 48 yards and two touchdowns. After playing less than half of the team's offensive snaps the first nine weeks, Watson has been on the field over 80 percent of the time during the last two games.

The uptick in play led to the brightest moments of a depressing Packers season and puts Watson first among all rookie wide receivers in touchdowns.

Watson's turnaround is impressive. The Packers aren't likely to follow in his footsteps this year. But a player the team desperately needed to be a difference-maker is shaping up to be exactly that.
