The Packers reportedly think Jordan Love can be a capable starter with 'considerable upside'

Jordan Love and Aaron Rodgers are going to be tied at the hip for the rest of time. Ironically, the same could have been said for Rodgers and his predecessor, Brett Favre, when the Green Bay Packers decided to move on from Favre in favor of Rodgers back in 2008.

Now 15 years later, the Packers are faced with the same question. Should they move on from their veteran quarterback in favor of the young up-and-comer? At least according to Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated, though, it's less of a dilemma for Green Bay this offseason because they believe in what they have in Love.

"The previous two offseasons, Green Bay’s focus was singular—get Rodgers back in the fold. My sense is that focus was born of Rodgers’ own excellence, the roster’s makeup (very win now), and the uneasiness of Jordan Love’s readiness to take over," Breer wrote. This year is different. They’re open to moving Rodgers. They have questions on backside-of-their-prime vets such as David Bakhtiari, with some cap issues to work through. And where they were worried about Love’s development a year ago, they’re now seeing a guy capable of starting—at the very least—with considerable upside."

While Love has only made only a handful of notable appearances for the Packers since being drafted No. 26 overall in 2020, he has flashed potential — especially this past season, when he came in for an injured Rodgers against the Philadelphia Eagles. He completed 6-of-9 passes for 113 yards and a touchdown in that game, looking crisp, confident, athletic and in control of the offense.

Of course, Love is always going to be at a disadvantage in Green Bay trying to replace a four-time MVP and future Hall of Famer, but there's a reason the Packers traded up to draft him in 2020. They saw the potential to be great in him and it's worth noting that he was often talked about as a raw yet high-potential quarterback in that draft class.

Could this finally be the year where Love's potential comes to fruition? We still have to wait on Rodgers to make a decision for that question to be fully answered, but it does sound like the Packers will be comfortable moving forward either way.
