The Pittsburgh Steelers Quarterback Cut Decision Just Became Obvious

Will Howard No Longer Deserves a Pittsburgh Steelers Roster Spot

When the Pittsburgh Steelers originally drafted Will Howard, it was with Mike Tomlin still as the head coach. Now, it is Mike McCarthy that has taken over, meaning there are no ties for Howard to hang onto.

That makes this preseason much more important for Howard to impress, as he is in a crowded quarterback room that already consists of Aaron Rodgers, Mason Rudolph and newly drafted Drew Allar.

This also makes the Steelers’ decision of who to cut from the quarterback room interesting, yet their decision might have just been made clear.

Will Howard Failed in His Biggest Opportunity

As the Steelers entered their Week 2 preseason game against the New York Jets, Howard was given the opportunity to emerge in the backup quarterback battle, and yet he failed.

He was given the entire first half to prove himself, but he did not take advantage of the opportunity. He completed just 10 of his 15 pass attempts for 74 yards while throwing two interceptions and led no scoring drives.

Howard needed to show his command of the offense as wells sound decision-making, but neither were on display against the Jets. This has now led to speculation that Howard could be the quarterback cut.

With Allar having impressed, and looking like the long-term answer behind Rodgers under this coaching staff, Howard most likely just worked his way out of Pittsburgh. He still has qualities to be a good backup quarterback, but it is becoming clear that will have to be elsewhere in the NFL.
