The under-the-radar free agent move Chiefs fans might actually love

The offensive line is a major talking point for the Kansas City Chiefs this offseason and for good reason. They traded Joe Thuney to the Chicago Bears, signed Jaylon Moore, and spent a first-round pick on Josh Simmons. Either Moore or Simmons is going to be the starting left tackle for this team.

What about the left guard position though? That was Thuney's original position before he was forced to play left tackle in the back half of the 2024 season and now the Chiefs will have to find a replacement at left guard.

While former second-round pick Kingsley Suamataia will have a chance to compete against Mike Caliendo for the starting gig, what if the Chiefs decided to bring in another name to compete for the job? What if that someone was Brandon Scherff, an NFL veteran with a decade of experience?

Brandon Scherff is still available in free agency and could be an option for Chiefs

Scherff spent the first seven years of his career with Washington before signing a massive three-year deal with the Jaguars in the 2022 offseason. Scherff had previously struggled to stay healthy before he headed to Jacksonville but he started all 17 games in each of his three seasons with the Jags and played pretty well during his time there.

One might ask 'If he was so good, then why is he still a free agent?' and that's a good question to ask. My guess would be that his run-blocking wasn't the best, as he graded out at 57.3 by Pro Football Focus for the 2024 season. That's obviously not ideal but Scherff was an excellent pass-blocker during his time with the Jags, not allowing a single sack in 2024.

While Scherff did all of this while playing right guard, if the Chiefs were to bring him in, he'd be asked to switch to left guard due to Trey Smith obviously being the starter on the right side. Scherff would also be a nice insurance policy to have if Smith were to get hurt, as he could switch back over to his preferred side.

There's no discussion or even random articles (except for this one, of course) linking K.C. to Scherff but for a team that has plenty of o-line question marks, it feels as though the long-time NFL veteran could fill a big role. He'd make plenty of sense in Kansas City and could help shore up a shaky position on the offensive line. Better yet -- He could help keep Patrick Mahomes upright and that's the most important thing for this team.
