The Youth of the Miami Dolphins Shines Versus the Detroit Lions
On Saturday, the Miami Dolphins played their second pre-season game, this one at Ford Field in Detroit.
Following what was reported to have been a dismal first joint practice on Wednesday and a marginal practice on Thursday, many were not expecting a highly competitive game from the Dolphins.
I watched the game through NFL+ and heard the Lions’ home broadcast.
This was telling as I repeatedly heard the names of many of the younger players, new to the Dolphins roster, or very young on the roster.
Players have their names mentioned when they perform well or poorly, so mentions of the Dolphins players by the commentators got my attention.
Numerous comments were made regarding many Dolphins players, and it was very encouraging as a Miami Dolphins fan that we have started to build a youth movement.
Players who were mentioned positively throughout the game were: Quarterback Quinn Ewers, running back Ollie Gordon, wide receivers Malik Washington, Tahj Washington, and Dee Eskridge, tight end Tanner Conner, defensive linemen Kenneth Grant, Jordan Phillips, and Zeek Biggers, linebackers Willie Gay Jr. and Grayson Murphy.
This is not an exhaustive list, nor is it meant to show the roster of a future Super Bowl team, but it certainly gives hope to the franchise.
The players who were fighting for a spot on the 53-man roster played tough and, yes, physical, against the Lions on Saturday.
The 2025 Dolphins version has a lot of work to do to continue to improve the team, such as depth at the offensive line and a starting-caliber secondary.
Despite the shortcomings, the game versus the Lions shows the potential of the youth movement on this team.
And if this season doesn’t go as planned and the wins aren’t there, as long as the young players on this team play well, develope, and show themselves to be the foundation for this team in the future, the Dolphins will come away this season with something.
