For much of the offseason, the San Francisco 49ers have maintained that their goal is to keep Brock Purdy in cherry red and gold for the long-term.
But with each day that goes by without a new deal, more speculation continues to pop up that the Niners may have other plans for their Pro Bowl QB.
San Francisco was expected to break the bank on a contract that would potentially pay the former last pick in the '22 Draft upwards of $60 million per year.
However, NBC's Chris Simms can't help but wonder if the franchise should reset the clock and trade Purdy somewhere else instead of paying him.
"Nobody looks at Brock Purdy and thinks he's a top 10 quarterback in football," Simms said on Monday's "PFT Live." "Yeah, with [Kyle] Shanahan as his OC and the 49ers All-Star team around the last few years, yeah he can look pretty damn good— he can look top 10ish. But we just saw last year ... 6-11 and we're going to pay over $50 million a year?"
"He's a good player— we know that. ... With where the 49ers are, would the Steelers want Brock Purdy as their quarterback?" the analyst posed. "It might be too late in the game to make a move like that for the 49ers now. But damn, if I had something to say about it I would've been like, 'Let's just blow this thing up! Let's trade him away to somebody and let's get somebody else at quarterback for the future and build this team again.'"
It's not likely that the Niners move off of Purdy in favor of a one-year rental like Aaron Rodgers or Kirk Cousins. But with the draft approaching there's a bit of an opening if that's something they want to do.
It's also a possibility that is the 49ers' QB of the future and just had a down year in 2024. Time will tell though, even if its not something the franchise has a lot of right now.
