After a long day of battling it out on the gridiron, the Dallas Cowboys have no hope left. It's 24-30 and with only six seconds left on the clock, they're backed up at their own 15-yard line.
It's pretty much game over in the middle of the 2025 NFL season and that point, head coach Brian Schottenheimer sits his $240 million quarterback, Dak Prescott, in favor of Joe Milton.
And it's the right call.
These are the things my brain randomly thinks about on Sundays when there's no football to watch on my TV. Now that Joe Milton, whom the Cowboys traded for on Thursday, has the inside track to become Dak Prescott's backup, discussions about Dallas' quarterback room have predictably gotten out of hand.
Former NFL All-Pro-turned-hot-take-artist LeSean McCoy said on FS1 that Prescott should be looking for a realtor because Milton can play. Meanwhile, a talking head out of Cleveland is fueling rumors about Prescott being traded to the Browns even though every credible insider is shooting down the made-up story. So allow me to clear some things up that should be obvious for knowledgeable fans.
The only quarterback in Dallas truly affected by Milton's arrival is Will Grier, who will be competing for a roster spot next summer, presumably behind the new quarterback. Additionally, Prescott is not being benched by Milton and his deal makes him almost untradeable. In other words, the recent QB addition does changes nothing about the top of the Cowboys depth chart.
However, learning about Milton's biggest strengths prompted the following thought: The Cowboys would probably bench Prescott if they needed a last-second Hail Mary to win the game. Not only would they do it, they should do it.
Milton's arm strength might be the best in the league. He told Tommy Yarrish, staff writer for DallasCowboys.com, he can throw the football for 95 yards. That might not say a lot about his level of quarterback play but he's probably who you want launching a bomb into the endzone in a Hail Mary spot.
"I've been watching college football since the 1980s, and Milton might be the most physically talented QB I've ever watched play," said A to Z Sports' Craig Smith about the quarterback. "Aside from the absurd arm talent, he's big, tall, and incredibly fast for his size."
And I'm not going to lie, if a game came down to that, I'd be hyped to see Milton in that situation.
