'They got after us a little bit' - Chiefs superstar Travis Kelce recalls getting 'smoked' by the Tennessee Vols in college

Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce has a loose connection to the Tennessee Vols.

Kelce played college football for the Cincinnati Bearcats from 2008 to 2012 (not including the 2010 season, during which Kelce was suspended). During his final two seasons at Cincinnati, Kelce's head coach was Butch Jones.

Jones left Cincinnati after the 2012 season to become the head coach at Tennessee.

In 2011, Cincinnati traveled to Knoxville for a matchup against Tennessee. The Vols blew out the Bearcats that afternoon, winning 45–23.

This week, Kelce and his brother Jason had Chiefs offensive lineman and former Vols star Trey Smith on their New Heights podcast. And Kelce brought up Cincinnati's loss to Tennessee in 2011.

"We got smoked when I was in college playing Tennessee," said Kelce. "Tyler Bray and Cordarrelle Patterson -- they got after us a little bit. But going back [to Tennessee] when Butch Jones was there and just being around (Knoxville), because Eric Berry had a football camp up there and I was up there trying to help him out and at least show my face. But obviously, I got some family around the Knoxville area, too. It was so wild to see that town. The entire city is orange -- like everything in sight is orange.

"Knoxville is everything is Vols all over the place. And, man, I just appreciated it from a completely different perspective, going back once I was already through college."

Tyler Bray passed for 405 yards and four touchdown in that win against Cincinnati. Cordarrelle Patterson actually wasn't at Tennessee yet (Patterson was only at UT for the 2012 season), but Vols wide receivers Justin Hunter and Da'Rick Rogers combined for 20 receptions for 256 yards and three touchdowns against the Bearcats (Hunter had 10 receptions for 156 yards and a touchdown while Rogers had 10 receptions for 100 yards and two touchdowns).

Kelce, meanwhile, caught zero passes for zero yards against Tennessee.
