This could be Jalen Hurts' last year with Eagles

For most of his career, Jalen Hurts has been one of the most polarizing figures in the NFL. He's led the Philadelphia Eagles to two Super Bowls and one title, and not even that has been enough to silence the narrative around him.

Now, an incendiary report from ESPN's Tim McManus and Jeremy Fowler has shed even more light on the inner dynamics of the organization, and it feels like even people in the building aren't fully sold on his play or personality.

To add insult to injury, the Eagles will have their sixth offensive play-caller of the Nick Sirianni era, which helps explain the roller-coaster tenure he's had with the team.

The Eagles have a decision to make about Jalen Hurts

According to NFL insider Albert Breer, that inconsistency has been partially due to the need to figure out what works best for Hurts.

"Yet, over his five years, no play-caller has started and finished two seasons in the role. Really, it has been 'get to the Super Bowl or get fired' for the guy in that position," Breer wrote.

Hurts' limitations to adapt to different offenses and a demeanor that has reportedly rubbed some people the wrong way make this situation all the more complex. He's signed through the 2029 season, but there's no more guaranteed money in his contract after 2027, so this will essentially be a contract year for him.

"So it’s complicated. If Hurts doesn’t get a new deal this offseason and things don’t go well under (new offensive coordinator Sean) Mannion, we could be asking bigger questions a year from now," Breer added.

The Eagles have pushed most of their dead cap money years into the future, but the bills will ultimately pile up. They'll have to eat hundreds of millions in dead cap money and rebuild at one point. That point might come sooner than general manager Howie Roseman would've wanted to if Hurts doesn't get it done in Sean Mannion's offense.
