While there are understandably concerns surrounding Jalon Walker, who is nursing a second injury heading into the season, the feeling around James Pearce Jr. is much different.
The Falcons second pick of the first round has turned heads since the first practice, upping the intensity level on the defensive side of the ball and flashing some elite pass rushing traits. From an athletic perspective, he was built to sack the quarterback, and the defensive staff is hoping he can immediately provide a boost in that area, which has plagued the Falcons for more than a decade.
Pearce’s practice success translated to the preseason. Nobody played more over the first two games, and he was able to generate seven pressures with a 21.1% pass rush win rate. That’s good for any pass rusher, but especially a rookie with no experience.
How James Pearce Jr. holds up on early downs will ultimately determine his role this season, but it’s evident he’s going to be on the field immediately. He will not participate in the Falcons final preseason game this Friday against the Cowboys, with Raheem Morris saying he’s seen enough going into Week 1.
Raheem Morris: "James Pearce is done for the preseason. I am really pleased with what he has given us this preseason."

The Falcons haven’t had a dominant pass rusher since John Abraham , who last played for the team in 2012. It’s been a blind spot for the organization, which is why Terry Fontenot doubled down on the position in the first round of this year’s NFL Draft.
Most expected Jalon Walker — the team’s 15th overall pick — would be the guy that would come in and make an immediate impact. But as of now, James Pearce Jr. looks the most likely of the two to be a game-changer as a rookie.
