This under-the-radar Commanders player could crush Packers in Week 2

When you begin to peel the layers back on the Washington Commanders’ defense, the conversation usually revolves around a reconstructed defensive front headlined by Daron Payne and hybrid linebacker Frankie Luvu. Rarely does the name Quan Martin surface first.

As the Commanders prepare for what should be a show-up in Green Bay on Thursday Night Football, the versatile defensive back may be the most underrated player capable of flipping the script.

Martin, now in his third season, has carved out a niche as a movable chess piece in Washington’s secondary. Listed as a safety, he doesn’t fit into a positional box. Instead, he has proven himself capable of contributing at all three levels of Joe Whitt Jr.'s defense.

He has the size and physicality to drop into the box and play the run, the fluid hips to cover receivers from the slot, and the instincts to patrol deep zones and erase vertical throws.

Few safeties bring that blend of alignment versatility, processing speed, and closing burst.

Quan Martin must be the Commanders' under-the-radar defensive catalyst against the Packers

What makes Martin particularly dangerous is the trust he places in his eyes. He reads route concepts quickly, anticipates where the quarterback wants to go, and can close space in a hurry.

Just take a peek back at this play against the Detroit Lions in the divisional round last season.

That football IQ, paired with his short-area quickness, allows him to break downhill on crossing routes and screens before they fully develop. Against a quarterback like Jordan Love — who thrives on rhythm throws and timing — Martin’s ability to diagnose plays early could be a hidden key to disrupting Green Bay’s offense.

Another trait that separates Martin is his knack for always being around the football. It's a trait all high-level defenders have. Whether it’s a tipped pass, a late rally to the sideline, or a tackle in space from the backside, he consistently inserts himself into the action.

That nose for the ball isn’t teachable; it’s a product of instincts and relentless effort. For a defense in need of an impact player like this, Martin provides the connective tissue, cleaning up plays and preventing small gains from turning into explosive ones.

There’s also a larger context to Martin’s story that makes his rise even more impressive. He was a Ron Rivera-regime draft selection on Day 2 in 2023. As the Commanders turn over their roster under new leadership, many of those picks have already been shown the door. Yet Martin has stuck.

And not only has he stuck — he’s earned a bigger role.

That in itself speaks volumes about the trust the current staff has in his ability to adapt, learn, and execute in multiple defensive looks. In a league where coaching changes often bury young players, Martin has quietly thrived.

Facing the Packers in Week 2, Martin’s skill set could prove invaluable.

Green Bay’s offense relies on spreading defenses thin, attacking the middle of the field with Jayden Reed and Romeo Doubs, together with tight ends Tucker Kraft and Luke Musgrave. And that's before they ever deploy the 220-pound battering ram that is Josh Jacobs out of the backfield.

For Martin, his versatility allows Washington to disguise coverages pre-snap and adjust seamlessly post-snap, giving the Commanders flexibility against one of the NFL’s more balanced offenses.

While he may not yet carry the name recognition of some of the league’s stars at his position, Martin embodies the type of underrated defender who tilts games.
