The Green Bay Packers are set to open training camp later this month. This is the first in a series of articles previewing the Packers position by position, analyzing the talent on the roster and discussing key questions that are facing the team as they begin preparation for the 2025 season. Today we will examine the quarterback position. We will examine another position each day until the start of training camp. Here are three big questions facing the Green Bay Packers at quarterback entering training camp in 2025:
The Projected Candidates: Starter: Jordan Love; Backup: Malik Willis; Fighting for QB3: Sean Clifford, Taylor Elgersma
Jordan Love was statistically slightly better in 2024 than in 2023, but he failed to take a step forward after his strong finish to the 2023 campaign. Injuries clearly had something to do with his struggles. Love suffered a knee injury late in the team’s season opener in Brazil and was never 100 percent after that.
Love needs to improve his footwork and his downfield accuracy. Head coach Matt LaFleur would like to also see the former Utah State star develop into a more vocal leader in his third season as the team’s starter.
Love also needs to find the sweet spot between being overly aggressive and trying to force the ball downfield and throwing check downs too often and being too conservative.
This will be a critical year for the Packers starter. Love has a strong arm and all the tools to become an elite NFL quarterback. Now he has to realize that potential.
Malik Willis did a great job as Love’s backup in 2025. He was acquired after the preseason and was thrust into action as the starter in Week 2 with less than a month of practice time. Willis has a strong arm and great athleticism and mobility. LaFleur revamped the playbook in the two games Willis started to take advantage of his strengths. It worked as Willis played well, and the team won both games.
This will be a contract year for Willis, and he is unlikely to be back in Green Bay in 2026. Still, he gives the team a strong backup quarterback, something few teams have. He has a lot at stake as he likely seeks to compete for a starting job next season.
Sean Clifford spent 2024 on the practice squad after a shaky training camp and preseason. He’s back to compete for a spot on the roster or more likely the practice squad. Clifford has intelligence and reads defenses well, but his lack of elite NFL arm strength limits him in game action. He will have a fight on his hands to remain with the team this preseason.
The Packers signed Canadian free agent Taylor Elgersma after the draft. He won the Canadian college equivalent of the Heisman Trophy as the country’s top college player last year and is an intriguing prospect. Elgersma possesses a strong arm and good mobility. Still, he has a major adjustment to make going from Canadian rules to the NFL and from college to the pros.
Elgersma will fight for the third quarterback job and a spot on the practice squad. After what will likely be a red shirt season this year, he can compete for a roster spot as the backup in 2026.
