Three concerning stats about Eagles anemic passing game

The Philadelphia Eagles defeated the Kansas City Chiefs 20-17 on Sunday to improve to 2-0, but it wasn't an impressive showing from the reigning champs. The passing game, specifically, looked even more dysfunctional and stale than it did in Week 1.

Jalen Hurts went 15-for-22 for only 101 yards and no touchdown passes against the Chiefs. He has zero passing touchdowns in two games. The passing game under new offensive coordinator Kevin Patullo must improve.

Here are three disconcerting stats that prove Philadelphia's passing game is a serious problem.

Jalen Hurts isn't taking risks

Hurts has attempted at least 22 passes and thrown for fewer than 153 passing yards in back-to-back games. Before this season, Hurts attempted at least 22 passes in 62 games and went under 153 passing yards in just four of them.

The way this offense is operating, the Eagles can only move the ball if they're extremely efficient on short passes, runs with Saquon Barkley and scrambles by Hurts. Philadelphia is typically adept at creating explosive plays in the passing game, but Hurts has been abnormally risk-averse to start the season.

Eagles QB Jalen Hurts not throwing deep

Hurts ranks 32nd out of 34 qualified quarterbacks in air yards per attempt (6.0), per rbsdm.com. Only Denver Broncos QB Bo Nix (5.5) and 41-year-old Aaron Rodgers (5.7) of the Pittsburgh Steelers are worse.

The biggest issue with this offense under Patullo is the unimaginative passing game. Whether it's play-calling or Hurts refusing to take any risks, the Eagles have gone with a painfully dull bunch of bubble screens and quick slants. No deep one-on-one shots to A.J. Brown, who only has six catches for 35 yards this season. No deep crossing routes from DeVonta Smith, who has only seven catches for 69 yards. It's all short, low-upside passes with no explosiveness. It's been enough for Philly to go 2-0, but this offense isn't sustainable.

Deep ball missing for Eagles

Hurts has only two completions of 10 or more air yards through two games, tied with Tyrod Taylor of the New York Jets for 34th in the NFL (per Mike Renner of CBS Sports)

This stat almost sounds impossible. Hurts has played two full games and attempted 45 passes, yet he only has six attempts of 10 or more air yards and two completions on those attempts. Taylor entered Sunday's game against the Buffalo Bills with 12 minutes left in the fourth quarter and completed the same number of those passes in only 11 total attempts.
