Three free agents the Chicago Bears should consider calling following rookie minicamp
David Banks-USA TODAY Sports

With the Chicago Bears' rookie minicamp now in the rearview mirror, all eyes now look toward the next step in the offseason program, the organized team activities.

After signing two players over the weekend once the rookie minicamp wrapped up, the Bears still have seven remaining spots on the 90-man roster left to fill. While some signings might still be made from players who tried out over the weekend, the Bears could also return to the open market to bring in some outside help on the roster.

However, the market is slim pickings this time of year prior to the official cut down date, but here are three free agents I would consider calling if I were Ryan Poles.

DL Calais Campbell

The culture fit, the leadership, the need, and the experience all make this free agent target desirable for the Bears to make ahead of OTAs. Credit PFF's Gordon McGuinness for being the first one to link this as well for the Bears.

Calais Campbell is already a lock for Canton after dominating the league for 16 seasons in his career, however, if he's not ready to hang up the cleats just yet, he would be the perfect fit on the Bears' defensive line.

Campbell can immediately slot in off the edge or on the interior for the Bears defensive line and would serve as an incredible leader and role player for the younger guys on the front. His work ethic and energy are also second to none in the NFL, something Matt Eberflus and Eric Washington would love to add on their defense.

DE Emmanuel Ogbah

Another top name off the edge the Bears could look into signing is Emmanuel Ogbah. Ogbah signing in Chicago would be eerily similar to the signing Poles made late last summer in Yannick Ngakoue, who could still be on the team's radar as well.

Ogbah has recorded 42.5 sacks in his eight year career and recorded 5.5 sacks during the 2023 season for the Miami Dolphins as a rotational piece. Ogbah also fits the qualifications the Bears tend to look for in their edge rushers and would be a more 3-down player compared to the other free agent pass rushers on the market.

The Bears just drafted Austin Booker in the fifth round, whom Eberflus and Washington seem to be really high on despite his limited experience. Giving Booker and veteran like Ogbah to learn from and rotate with would be a massive asset for a young player during his rookie season and the team as a whole.

OG Phil Haynes

While the Bears have done a solid job addressing the depth on the offensive line this offseason, it never hurts to add more competition over the summer. Even after trading for Ryan Bates and signing Coleman Shelton, more work is especially needed on the interior of the Bears' offensive line.

Phil Haynes is a name I would keep in mind after spending time within Shane Waldron's offense with the Seattle Seahawks. Haynes' knowledge of the scheme up-front could also give him an advantage over the other players on the roster which would only increase the competition for the roster spot as a depth player.

Drafting Kiran Amegadjie was a solid move for the Bears given it seems like they are willing to try him out at multiple positions up-front, but as we learned this weekend, he likely won't be able to hit the field until training camp as he rehabs from his injury. In terms of filling a roster spot with someone to increase the competition, you couldn’t go wrong with bringing in a player like Haynes.
