The story of the 2024 Las Vegas Raiders has been off to somewhat of a wild start. Let's start with the preseason, which saw them facing off against the Minnesota Vikings, Dallas Cowboys, and now the San Francisco 49ers next week.
These games were not just about winning but also about evaluating new strategies, player performances, and, notably, the quarterback battle between Gardner Minshew and Aidan O'Connell. It was also about the roster battles.
With one more preseason game left, there are guys known as roster bubble players, and even guys fighting for second or third-string spots that will play a ton on Sunday against the 49ers. Some of those guys may have already won or lost their spots after just two games.
Let's get into the guys who lost their jobs, or fell down the depth chart, after the Raiders' loss to the Cowboys.
The Raiders signed Wilkerson in May 2023, initially to the practice squad, indicating an interest in his potential but also the challenge he faced in securing a permanent roster spot. His signing was part of an effort to bolster the wide receiver corps. This year, he even still has a legit shot to make the roster, but, his shot at being that fourth wide receiver on the team is now gone.
This isn't really because of him, but more so because of how well wide receiver DJ Turner has performed. Wilkerson also doesn't do special teams, so Turner has that edge over him as well.
This one is pretty obvious, because, well, he quite literally lost his job. The starting quarterback gig for the Raiders was O'Connell's to lose. He was the favorite to be the season starter, and he lost it to Minshew in what was a surprising decision by Antonio Pierce. The door isn't closed on O'Connell just yet, though.
The Raiders had a battle going on for QB3, too. Initially, we thought Brown had that locked down over Bradley, but then Brown was cut. Then the Raiders brought in Nathan Peterman, a guy who knows the Luke Getsy system. So, it's obvious here that he will be the guy over Bradley, who as an undrafted free-agent rookie, will likely hit the practice squad.
