Shortly after the Tennessee Titans suffered a 26-0 loss to the then-winless Houston Texans on Sept. 28, Nick Suss of the Nashville Tennessean suggested the Titans are one of the worst 0-4 teams in NFL history.
This has been accompanied by reports noting the Titans could part ways with head coach Brian Callahan "sooner than later." Despite the black cloud hovering over the Titans, Callahan is attempting to remain positive.
"I don't feel hopeless, and I don't sense that from anybody that works in our building," Callahan recently insisted, as ESPN's Turron Davenport shared on Friday. "We're in a rough stretch, 0-4, and that doesn't feel good. But there's an excitement about trying to climb out of it. Real competitors relish that challenge. And I think we got a bunch of competitors on our team, on our coaching staff and in our building that are going to fight like crazy to turn this thing, man."
Callahan seemingly tried to spark his offense when he handed play-calling duties to quarterbacks coach Bo Hardegree ahead of the Houston game. The Texans subsequently pitched a shutout, and the Titans will enter the weekend with the worst point differential in the NFL for the ongoing season (minus-69).
ESPN stats show that Tennessee began Friday ranked last in the league with an average of 12.8 points scored per game and 31st with an average of 210.5 offensive yards per contest. According to Pro Football Reference, Titans rookie quarterback and No. 1 overall draft pick Cam Ward is responsible for the league's lowest QBR (19.8) among qualified passers.
Titans right guard Kevin Zeitler was part of the 2017 Cleveland Browns team that went 0-16. Thus, he's no stranger to what those within the Titans are experiencing in the early days of October.
"I've been on some rougher teams," Zeitler recently acknowledged. "I keep telling 'em, good things happen to those who keep going — and right now, it's on us. We got to keep going."
Meanwhile, Callahan now holds a 3-18 record as Tennessee's head coach. Some think he could be one loss away from losing his job, but Titans guard Peter Skoronski had something else on his mind this week.
"[Getting a win would be] huge just knowing what it feels like," Skoronski said. "Giving that little confidence boost to go forward. Putting one in the win column would be big."
As of Friday morning, ESPN BET had the Titans as 7.5-point underdogs for Sunday's game against the 2-2 Arizona Cardinals.
