Tennessee Titans All-Pro running back Derrick Henry admitted this past June that signing a contract extension or revised deal would "be great," as he was set to earn a base salary of $12 million for 2022 and $12.5 million for 2023 at that time.
Henry may not have received the exact financial guarantees he wanted, but the 28-year-old nevertheless has millions of reasons to smile heading into the Week 1 game versus the New York Giants on Sept. 11.
NFL Network's Ian Rapoport (h/t Kevin Patra) reported Thursday that the Titans reworked Henry's contract to provide him with a $2 million raise. The $14 million Henry is now due makes him the NFL's highest-paid running back for 2022 ahead of Ezekiel Elliott, who is owed $12.4 million from the Dallas Cowboys.
Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio offered more information.
"Instead of earning $12 million in base salary, he gets a $9 million signing bonus, a $4 million base salary, and $1 million in 46-man per-game roster bonuses," Florio wrote about Henry.
"The hitch is obvious. He needs to suit up in every game to get the full $2 million in new money. Half of the amount hinges on his ability to avoid injury, which given the position he plays can be unavoidable."
Henry was the league's two-time reigning rushing champion who was again leading the NFL with 937 rushing yards and 10 touchdowns on 219 carries when he suffered a foot injury on Oct. 31 that kept him sidelined until the playoff loss to the Cincinnati Bengals in January. While his 2023 salary is now at $10.5 million, the two-time Pro Bowl selection will still essentially be playing for an extension when games begin to matter two Sundays down the road.
