The Tennessee Titans are adding an experienced veteran to their special teams unit as the team continues to make moves in free agency.

Per reports from ESPN's Adam Schefter, the Titans have reached an agreement on a one-year deal with four-time All-Pro and Pro Bowl punter Johnny Hekker, who won a Super Bowl with the Los Angeles Rams in 2021. The move comes after the Titans decided to not re-sign punter Ryan Stonehouse.

"Sources: Four-time All-Pro punter Johnny Hekker reached agreement today on a fully-guaranteed, one-year deal with the Tennessee Titans," Schefter tweeted. "Hekker will be reunited with Titans special teams coordinator John Fassel, with whom he started his NFL career with in Los Angeles."

Hekker spent 10 seasons with the Rams, staying with the team during the move from St. Louis to Los Angeles. He then played for the Carolina Panthers the past three seasons.

Hekker led the league in total punt yardgage in 2015 and 2016. While there's no doubt about his strong led, he is also no stranger to trick plays. During his 13-year career, Hekker has gone 15 of 26 passing for 193 yards and one touchdown. With Fassel now in Tennessee, it wouldn't be too surprising if Hekker slings the rock on some fake punts next season.

Packers make sneaky move by grabbing 49ers castoff who could make things interesting in key offensive room

The Green Bay Packers are adding one extra offensive piece to the roster. On Friday, the team claimed running back Israel Abanikanda off waivers from the San Francisco 49ers. He had been waived by the Niners, where he spent seven months, on Thursday. Abanikanda played college football at Pittsburgh and was drafted in the 2023 fifth round by the New York Jets. He was cut by the Jets last December and claimed by the 49ers right thereafter. Because his original rookie contract has never been terminated, he is now under control of the Packers through 2026. The running back only had playing time in regular season games during his rookie season. Abanikanda appeared in six games, with 22 carries for 70 yards (3.2 yards per attempt), plus seven receptions in 11 targets for 43 yards. In 2023, he played 7% of the offensive snaps and 1% of the special teams snaps for the Jets. Since Israel Abanikanda played for Nathaniel Hackett and Kyle Shanahan, he has a fairly decent understanding of the Green Bay Packers' offensive scheme under Matt LaFleur, which will help his transition throughout training camp. Profile Back in 2023, Abanikanda was projected as a third/fourth-round prospect by NFL.com draft analyst Lance Zierlein. His one-cut ability, important for LaFleur's offensive style, was highlighted on his draft report. "A zone-scheme runner with early down size, Abanikanda can be a bit inconsistent with his reads and tempo early in the run. However, he has plant-and-go agility and is able to snap off cuts at tight angles to elude short-area traffic when needed. He has terrific top-end speed to gash a poorly fitted run front, but he needs to run with better discipline and downhill decisiveness to stay ahead of NFL speed. Abanikanda isn't much of a third down option, but he does have the size and talent to compete for a RB2/3 slot early on with a chance to move up the depth chart in time." — Lance Zierlein. Depth The Packers are relatively short at running back because undrafted rookie Amar Johnson started camp in the active/non-football injury list. He can be activated at any time, but it makes sense to add one more option to the backfield meanwhile. The top of the depth chart has Josh Jacobs, last year's third-round pick MarShawn Lloyd, and holdovers Emanuel Wilson and Chris Brooks. Most likely also competing for a practice squad spot is another undrafted rookie, Jalen White. Green Bay already had an open roster spot, so no corresponding move is necessary. The Packers have already had three practices during camp. The next one is on Sunday. Green Bay's first preseason game happens on August 9, curiously against the Jets at Lambeau Field.

Orioles infielder set to make MLB debut after Gregory Soto trade

The Orioles are going to select infielder Jeremiah Jackson to their roster. Manager Tony Mansolino informed reporters, including Steve Melewski, that he will take the roster spot vacated by left-hander Gregory Soto. Soto was traded to the Mets earlier on Friday. Jackson, 25, gets called up to the majors for the first time and will be making his debut as soon as he gets into a game. He signed a minor league deal with the club in the offseason and has been putting up huge numbers in the minors this year. Split between Double-A and Triple-A, he has 351 plate appearances with 15 home runs. He’s only drawing walks at a 4% clip but is also only striking out 14.2% of the time. He has a combined line of .311/.340/.538 line and a 135 wRC+. Prior to joining the Orioles, Jackson spent time in the systems of the Angels and Mets. The Halos flipped him to the latter club in the 2023 deadline deal , which sent right-hander Dominic Leone to Los Angeles. The lack of strikeouts this year is notable, as that was a key problem for Jackson in previous seasons. He had a 33% strikeout rate in 2021, but he has dropped that down over the years. Defensively, he’s played the three infield spots to the left of first base and all three outfield spots as well. He has some speed on the bases, regularly putting up double-digit stolen bases totals, including ten already this year. It’s possible that this will be a short big league stint for Jackson. Putting him in for Soto gives the club 14 position players and just 12 pitchers. That’s less than ideal, and they will likely look to even that back to 13 and 13 soon. On the other hand, it’s possible the Baltimore roster is set for further moves in the coming days. Ryan O’Hearn, Ramón Urías, Ramón Laureano, Cedric Mullins, Zach Eflin, Charlie Morton, Tomoyuki Sugano, Trevor Rogers, Seranthony Domínguez and Andrew Kittredge are all candidates to be moved before the deadline. It’s anyone’s guess how the roster will look in the wake of all those theoretical trades. Since Jackson can play multiple positions, perhaps he’ll find a way to still have a role once the dust settles next week.

Raiders HC Pete Carroll expands on decision to release DT Christian Wilkins

For the first time since the Las Vegas Raiders' shocking release of DT Christian Wilkins on Thursday, head coach Pete Carroll fielded questions about the move. "To make our decision, we watched our way through the whole thing," Carroll told the Las Vegas Review-Journal's Vinny Bonsignore. "We're keeping really clear with what we said. I think there was no clear path to his return, and we just had to move on." Wilkins was injured in Week 5 against the Denver Broncos last season, suffering a foot injury that would put him on the IR after five games. It was not what the Raiders had hoped for after then-general manager Tom Telesco signed him to a four-year, $110 million deal in March 2024. Initially, Wilkins did have surgery, but wasn't healthy by the time organized team activities started, and his rehab proved to be a "challenging process" as described by Carroll a few months ago. According to NFL insider Ian Rapoport, Las Vegas reportedly wanted Wilkins to undergo another foot surgery, but he declined, which led to the release of the six-year pro from Clemson. The Raiders are attempting to void $35.2 million in remaining guarantees that Wilkins was owed on his contract. The NFLPA filed a grievance against Las Vegas as a result. Wilkins was brought in to help star pass rusher Maxx Crosby create problems for opposing offenses. The Raiders got a brief look when Wilkins recorded 17 tackles, two tackles for loss, six quarterback hits and two sacks before he got injured in the second quarter. The injury was unfortunate for Las Vegas, which had counted on Wilkins to produce similar results, as he had in his last three seasons with the Dolphins, recording 17 sacks, including nine in 2023. Perhaps Raiders GM John Spytek saw this coming when the silver and black selected Tonka Hemingway and JJ Pegues in the 2025 NFL Draft. While there is still time to find the next player to fill the void left by Wilkins, there is a massive hole in the interior line.

New York Yankees Swing Blockbuster Trade For Colorado Rockies Third Baseman

The Colorado Rockies have traded third baseman Ryan McMahon to the New York Yankees, MLB.com's Mark Feinsand reported Friday afternoon. Per Feinsand, the Rockies got back a pair of 22-year-old pitching prospects back in return. Left-hander Griffin Herring and right-hander Josh Grosz were ranked No. 8 and No. 21, respectively, in the Yankees' farm system. Herring was the organization's top southpaw. McMahon has been brought up in trade rumors for years, as the Rockies haven't made the postseason since 2018. He became a fan favorite after replacing Nolan Arenado in the hot corner, though, sliding over from second base and establishing himself as a lineup regular in the process. Dating back to 2019, McMahon has appeared in 92.8% of Colorado's regular season games. He has averaged 24 home runs, 28 doubles, 78 RBIs, 13 defensive runs saved and a 2.9 WAR per 162 games in that span, batting .241 with a .748 OPS. McMahon is hitting .217 with a .717 OPS so far in 2025, following up his first All-Star campaign with his least productive showing since 2020. Since June 6, however, he is batting .241 with an .811 OPS. The 30-year-old veteran has two years and $32 million left on his contract beyond this season, making him a valuable piece for the 26-76 Rockies to pawn off before the July 31 trade deadline. He ends his nine-year Rockies career with the ninth-most games played in franchise history, plus the 10th-highest WAR. As for the Yankees, they released DJ LeMahieu – a former Rockies standout himself – earlier this month. Last year's major deadline acquisition, Jazz Chisholm Jr., moved over to second in LeMahieu's place, leaving Oswald Peraza and Jorbit Vivas to platoon at third. McMahon will give New York far more stability at third base as the club tries to keep pace in the playoff race, but there are still six days left for the front office to make additional moves.
