'TNF' preview: Chiefs' Patrick Mahomes should feast vs. Broncos

The Kansas City Chiefs might hit the over ( 47.5 ) by themselves, and Russell Wilson and Sean Payton might brawl on the Denver Broncos sideline. Here's what to watch for as the Chiefs (4-1) prepare to steamroll the hapless Broncos (1-4) on "Thursday Night Football."

WHEN DENVER IS ON OFFENSE

Russell Wilson and Sean Payton's bad romance:  The Wilson-Payton marriage is a disaster. In Week 5, frustrations may have finally started to boil over.

Wilson has played decently in the first half, but he is among the worst quarterbacks in the league in the second half. His 56.3% completion percentage ranks 27th of 28 quarterbacks with 50 second-half pass attempts.

Denver has been outscored 93-54 after halftime, and the team's struggles during the second half reflect on Payton. The poor halftime adjustments are a sign that whatever is wrong with the Broncos, it starts at the top.

Jaleel McLaughlin: Payton has a history of unearthing undrafted running backs, including Pierre Thomas and Chris Ivory, and McLaughlin is next in line. He has emerged as a lethal weapon on screen passes, which Payton loves to run.

Chiefs secondary: Denver needs Wilson to complete passes to keep up with the Chiefs offense. Kansas City's secondary, however, could make things difficult for Denver's QB and wideouts Jerry Jeudy and Courtland Sutton. The Chiefs rank third in yards per target against wide receivers, allowing 705 yards to receivers on 117 targets, per RotoWire.

Marvin Mims: The Broncos' second-round pick has big-play potential, and Denver will need to hit on attempts to Mims to pull off the upset. The former Oklahoma wide receiver only has 10 receptions, but he has gained 246 yards and leads the league at 24.6 yards per reception.

WHEN KANSAS CITY IS ON OFFENSE

Patrick Mahomes feasts: Denver's league-worst defense is ready for the picking. Mahomes must be licking his chops waiting to face a unit that has allowed 13 touchdown passes and 9.15 yards per attempt, both the highest marks in the league. Mahomes is 11-0 all time as a starter against the Broncos and has scored at least 20 points in each game. Overall, he is 250-of-379 (66%) for 2,959 yards, 18 touchdown passes and eight interceptions.

Mismatch in the trenches: K.C.'s Joe Thuney and Creed Humphrey rank in the top three in ESPN's pass-block win rate metric among interior linemen. The Broncos, meanwhile, are 29th in pass-rush win rate. The mismatch extends to the rushing attack. Denver is 30th in run-stop win rate and 31st in rush expected points added (EPA). Kansas City lags behind in rush-block win rate (26th) but is 11th in rush EPA.

Isiah Pacheco: That should mean a monster game for running back Pacheco. As terrible as Denver's secondary is, the front is even worse. Denver has allowed 821 yards and eight touchdowns to running backs on 134 carries, an average of 6.1 yards per attempt. Pacheco was held in check by the Vikings in Week 5, but two games ago against the Jets, he had a career-high 115 rushing yards

Big game for Travis Kelce: The Broncos can't stop anyone, which includes Kansas City's star tight end. Denver is tied for 28th in defending tight ends, allowing 26 receptions, 316 yards and three touchdowns. Its 9.58 yards per target allowed to tight ends are the second most in the NFL. Kelce is averaging 55.5 yards per game, his fewest since 2015. He should get on track in Week 6.
