Disagreeable penalties and odd rule changes have taken their usual place in the spotlight across the last few NFL seasons. Week to week there will always be rulings that draw the ire of at least one fan base.
But no call in recent years has sparked controversy over the Philadelphia Eagles' special short-distance play. Some refer to it as the "brotherly shove," but what is commonly referred to as the "tush push" has become a hot topic for 31 other teams and their fans.
Others have tried their best to replicate it and have benefitted to some extent. But no team has matched the consistency of the Eagles who achieved a 86% success rate in the 2022 and 2023 seasons.
That is ten percentage points higher than the league average in the same span at 76%. Somewhat resulting from that statistic, fans and players have grown tired of its use.
But Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach Todd Bowles falls on the opposite side of the aisle as he revealed at the combine this week. Bowles also serves on the league's competition committee.
"The safety of it is always going to be a question because it’s a rugby-style play, but I have nothing against it," Bowles said. "You found guys that are being creative and found the niche and how to gain an edge in this league and that’s what we as coaches try to do on a daily basis.
"Now it’s up to defensive coaches to try to gain an edge to try to stop it. That’s the challenge of it every time someone brings something new whether it’s offense or defense. I’m all for it that way."
The Eagles did utilize the play against Bowles and the Bucs this season though it was not enough to beat Tampa Bay who handled their opponent a 33-16 loss, one of only three on the season for the Super Bowl champions.
This question for Bowles stemmed out the topic returning to the foreground at this week's NFL Scouting Combine.
The Green Bay Packers have officially proposed a ban on the tush push. The proposal can be voted on next month at the annual league meeting, needing 24 of 32 owners to vote in favor of it to pass.
If Bowles has it his way, then fans would have to deal with the play remaining in the game. But perhaps, as he mentions, a defensive coach will get creative and find a way to limit its success.
