Todd Bowles Says Buccaneers Can Play Without Vita Vea

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers remain stuck in a contract stalemate with star defensive tackle Vita Vea as the two sides search for a resolution.

Vea is entering the final year of his current contract but is looking for an extension. With Tampa Bay unwilling to meet his current demands, the veteran defensive tackle requested a trade from the organization.

Nobody questions Vea’s importance to the Buccaneers defense. However, Todd Bowles recently suggested the team can still succeed without its defensive anchor.

Speaking with the media following Thursday’s practice, Bowles addressed Vea’s ongoing hold-in and made it clear he believes Tampa Bay has options if the situation continues.

“We can play without him; that’s not a big deal. You don’t want to play without him, but we can play without him,” Bowles said, via Logan Robinson of BucsGameday.

There is certainly some coach speak behind Bowles’ comments. No head coach is going to publicly admit his team cannot function without a player during contract negotiations.

Still, it is a surprising stance considering how important Vea has been to everything the Buccaneers do defensively.

Vita Vea Remains the Foundation of Tampa Bay’s Defense

Bowles’ defensive system is built around having a dominant presence in the middle of the defensive line. For years, that player has been Vea.

The veteran nose tackle is the centerpiece of Tampa Bay’s defense, controlling gaps, absorbing double teams, and creating opportunities for teammates to make plays.

The results speak for themselves. The Buccaneers have finished with a top-five rushing defense in six of Vea’s eight NFL seasons. Since he became a full-time starter in 2019, Tampa Bay has consistently featured the NFL’s best run defense.

Vea’s impact is not limited to stopping the run. He has also developed into one of the league’s most productive interior pass rushers, recording 17 sacks over the last three seasons.

That total is higher than what Devonte Wyatt and Jalen Carter have produced during the same stretch. Both players received major contract extensions this offseason that now put them ahead of Vea financially.

Beyond the statistics, Vea’s biggest contributions often come from the attention he commands. His ability to occupy multiple blockers allows Tampa Bay’s linebackers and edge rushers to find opportunities.

The Contract Decision Is Complicated, But 2026 Is Not

There is a legitimate debate about whether the Buccaneers should give Vea a massive long-term extension.

Vea is entering his age-31 season, and committing around $24 million annually to an aging defensive tackle would come with significant risk.

However, that decision is separate from what Tampa Bay needs in 2026.

The Buccaneers completely revamped their defensive front this offseason after years of inconsistency. The group finally looks like a potential strength, but Vea remains the player who makes everything work.

Losing him would erase much of the progress Tampa Bay has made and leave the defense searching for answers just weeks before the regular season begins.

Todd Bowles may believe the Buccaneers can survive without Vita Vea, but that is a risk the team should not want to take.

If Tampa Bay wants to compete in 2026, keeping its defensive cornerstone on the field should be one of the organization’s top priorities.
