During a Monday appearance on "The Herd with Colin Cowherd," retired quarterback Tom Brady discussed the Kansas City Chiefs attempting to become the first team to three-peat as Super Bowl champions this coming season.
"To put three of those together, in back-to-back-to-back seasons, with drafting last, a very hard schedule, all of the turnover in free agency and guys continuing to be motivated, it's a big challenge," Brady explained, according to Ryan Morik of Fox News. "There's not a 50% chance of that happening. They're way less than that. Those players are going to show up every day, they're going to have to put in the work like they have."
While Brady and the New England Patriots were responsible for the NFL's first dynasty of the 2000s, they fell short of winning three straight Super Bowl games in January 2006. New England later made three consecutive Super Bowl appearances but lost Super Bowl LII, the club's second trip during that run, to the Philadelphia Eagles in February 2018.
As for the Chiefs, they've played in four Super Bowl contests since February 2020 and are coming off back-to-back championships. Brady indicated that Kansas City has the necessary pieces in place to play on Super Bowl Sunday this coming February.
"They have a tremendous coach in Andy Reid, who doesn't ever look backward," Brady added about the Chiefs. "He's not going to say, 'Hey, because we were great last year, we're going to be great again this year.' He's a veteran, experienced, championship-level coach who holds those guys accountable. They've got a great quarterback in Patrick [Mahomes], who, as we know, when he's on the field, he's as great a football player as there is in the NFL. Travis Kelce, what he can do at the tight end position is really a great safety blanket."
Kelce, a three-time Super Bowl champion, said earlier this spring he wants three more championship rings before he retires.
As of Tuesday morning, DraftKings Sportsbook listed the Chiefs as the betting favorites at +550 odds to win Super Bowl LIX.
One wonders if Brady could end up trying to prevent Kansas City from completing a first-ever Super Bowl three-peat if a different contender needs an emergency quarterback who happens to be a proven winner come December or January.
