Patrick Mahomes of the Kansas City Chiefs has repeatedly made it known that living legend Tom Brady has given him "something to strive for every single day" as it pertains to possibly becoming the greatest quarterback in NFL history.
During a recent appearance on "The Joel Klatt Show," Brady suggested that he notices aspects of his personality in how Mahomes handles serving as a QB1 for a franchise.
"It’s always that line about who wants to win versus who’s willing to do whatever it takes to win," Brady explained, as shared by Michael David Smith of Pro Football Talk. "Everyone wants to win, but what are the habits and the daily habits and the actionable things you need to do every day to put your team in a position to win? So, Patrick Mahomes, to me, is the one that does that the most often because who he is, obviously his physical talent, how he understands what he needs to do offensively, and he brings a consistent winning attitude to work every single day. In the biggest moments, you can depend on him the most."
Brady retired in February 2023 as a seven-time Super Bowl champion and as the only player to ever earn Super Bowl Most Valuable Player Award honors on five occasions. Meanwhile, Mahomes is a three-time Super Bowl champion and a three-time Super Bowl MVP who will turn just 30 years old in September.
Additionally, Mahomes seems to have quite a chip on his shoulder after Kansas City failed to become the first team in NFL history to three-peat as Super Bowl champions this past February.
For an article published on July 14, Jeremy Fowler of ESPN revealed that league executives, coaches and scouts surveyed by the network ranked Mahomes as the best quarterback in the league even though Josh Allen of the Buffalo Bills is the reigning regular-season MVP. Without directly saying so, Brady confirmed during the show segment that he agrees with such rankings.
"There’s other guys that are still developing, and they need to prove it before, in my mind, I can say, 'Oh yeah, he’s done it,'" Brady added while comparing other quarterbacks to Mahomes. "...They’ve all shown flashes of amazing things. They’re all great players. All of them can make tremendous plays. At some point, they need to take the next step and take, in my mind, more ownership of what they’re doing, in terms of the organizational level, to do more things to empower more people, to get more people on that train or that bus with you to head in the direction you want to go."
Brady has often said that he learned more from losing than from winning during his playing career. If that proves to be true for Mahomes, he could begin quite the "revenge tour" when Kansas City opens the upcoming season with a matchup against the Los Angeles Chargers that will be held in Brazil on Friday, Sept. 5.
