NFL legend and Fox Sports analyst Tom Brady just dropped his newest NFL power rankings after Week 5, and this time, there’s a big shakeup at the top.
In a post on X, Brady shared Fox Sports’ video of his rankings with a short caption:
“Detroit at #1. Agree?”
For the first time this season, the Detroit Lions have taken the top spot on Brady’s list, replacing the Philadelphia Eagles, who slipped to No. 2 after a surprising loss to the Denver Broncos.
Brady praised the Lions’ consistency and balance, noting that quarterback Jared Goff and Detroit’s offense have looked “amazing” in recent weeks.
“Yeah, they got off to a slow start this year in Week 1,” Brady said on the broadcast. “But since then, they’ve been on fire. Goff and that offense have looked amazing, but they’re going to be challenged next week against Kansas City.”

The Lions are now 4-1 on the season, showing strong performances on both sides of the ball. Their early struggles appear to be behind them, and now even Brady, a seven-time Super Bowl champion, believes they’ve earned the right to be called the best team in football.
Brady’s full top 10 included several surprises. His former team, the New England Patriots, re-entered the list at No. 10 after two straight wins, a 42-13 blowout over the Carolina Panthers and a 23-20 upset of the Buffalo Bills.
“We’ve got a shake-up at the top and about 15 teams that probably deserve to be in the rankings,” Brady explained. “New England, Green Bay, Denver, Indy, San Fran, that’s 10 through six. Jacksonville jumps from outside the top 10 to No. 5 this week with a huge win over the Chiefs. That’s back-to-back wins over the 49ers and Chiefs. What more could you do than that?”
The Jacksonville Jaguars made one of the biggest leaps of the week, cracking Brady’s top five after back-to-back statement wins. Meanwhile, the Buffalo Bills dropped from No. 2 to No. 4 following their loss to the Patriots.
Brady also had some fun with his commentary on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who landed at No. 3.
“Nice to see you, Baker, talking that [explicit],” he said with a grin, referring to quarterback Baker Mayfield’s fiery confidence after a road win in Seattle.
Under head coach Dan Campbell, the Lions have built one of the most balanced teams in the league. They rank among the top offenses thanks to Goff, Amon-Ra St. Brown, and tight end Sam LaPorta, while running backs Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery have given them a dangerous ground game that averages over 130 rushing yards per game.
On defense, edge rusher Aidan Hutchinson continues to make life miserable for opposing quarterbacks. He already has five sacks and two forced fumbles this season.
Brady himself left the debate open-ended, asking fans directly if they agreed with his choice.
Still, the numbers don’t lie. The Lions have now won four straight games, averaging nearly 35 points per contest and have shown resilience on both sides of the ball. Meanwhile, the once-dominant Chiefs sit at 2-3, searching for answers.
As the Lions prepare to take on the Chiefs, their spot atop Brady’s list will be tested immediately. But for now, the message from one of football’s greatest minds is clear: Detroit is finally for real.
