Tom Brady has been performing a balancing act all season long.
Brady signed a 10-year, $375 million contract with Fox Sports to serve as their lead color commentator in May. However, matters were complicated when his bid for minority ownership of the Las Vegas Raiders was approved in October.
Since then, Brady has been heavily restricted in his broadcasting duties, largely to prevent him from giving the Raiders a competitive advantage. Playing both roles simultaneously has turned the future Hall of Famer into an unwilling lightning rod of controversy.
The situation has reached a fever pitch this week, due to Brady’s assignment of the Detroit Lions and Washington Commanders game on Saturday. Brady has played a massive role in trying to secure Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson for the Raiders’ head-coaching vacancy.
Many have raised concerns about a potential conflict of interest, and some wonder how much access Brady will have to Johnson as a result.
There was some speculation that Brady would have to choose between being an owner of a team and broadcaster. However, his longtime agent Don Yee has squashed those rumors.
“Tom has had a tremendous amount of fun working with Fox this year, and he’s really excited about the future with Fox and his growth on their team,” Yee said to Sports Business Journal. “And this year was the first year of a long relationship.”
While the noise surrounding Brady’s dual roles has reached a point where Yee felt his comments were needed, it is unsurprising to hear the news that he intends to remain at Fox.
Brady was never realistically going to walk away from making nearly $40 million a year from his broadcasting job, nor were there any reports suggesting he was looking for a way out of his contract.
Opinions will still be had about Brady’s performance in the broadcast booth and his dual roles, but so long as he is having fun as Yee suggests, seeing him calling games will be a common sight for the next decade.
