Tom Brady opens up about devastating Super Bowl loss

In the latest release of episodes of Apple TV's "The Dynasty" documentary series about how the New England Patriots won six Super Bowl championships across the opening two decades of the 2000s, former New England quarterback Tom Brady touched upon the club's 17-14 loss to the New York Giants in Super Bowl XLII.

"We were crushed," Brady admitted about the defeat, as shared by Bryan DeArdo of CBS Sports. "I was crushed. That was our history-making game. That would have been everything. ... We were as devastated as you could be. There was no sleep. There was no sleep for a long time."

Brady entered February 2008 as a three-time Super Bowl champion, and ESPN notes that the Giants were 12-point underdogs for Super Bowl XLII against a Patriots team that famously went 18-0.

Late in the contest's fourth quarter, New York quarterback Eli Manning and wide receiver David Tyree connected for what became one of the most famous plays in NFL history. Manning then tossed a go-ahead touchdown pass with 35 seconds remaining.

Brady came close to completing a deep ball to Hall of Famer Randy Moss that would've put the Patriots in range to attempt a game-tying field goal in the matchup's closing seconds. However, the pass was deflected before it fell harmlessly to the turf.

"That still haunts me," Moss said in "The Dynasty" episode about that particular play. "My fingertips touched it. I nipped it."

Moss never earned a Super Bowl ring during his legendary career, and Brady's Patriots lost to the Giants again in Super Bowl XLVI held in February 2012. However, TB12 ultimately guided New England to three titles from February 2015 through the winter of 2019.

Despite the club's many successes, it sounds like Patriots president Jonathan Kraft won't ever forget what he witnessed shortly after Super Bowl XLII concluded.

"I'm watching guys throw up and cry on the floor," Kraft said during the show. "I've never seen that. I've never, ever, seen that."

Brady retired in February 2023 a seven-time Super Bowl champion viewed by many as the GOAT, but it's clear he still regrets the fact that the 2007 edition of the Patriots finished that campaign with a "1" in their overall loss column.
