New York Giants quarterback Tommy DeVito’s 15 minutes of fame are over, but his time in East Rutherford isn’t.
On Thursday, Art Stapleton reported that the backup quarterback will sign his exclusive rights free agent (ERFA) tender before free agency begins.
With the Giants re-signing their cult hero quarterback, he will stand alone in the quarterback room – for now. With Daniel Jones released during the season and Drew Lock a free agent, New York had no quarterback under contract through the NFL Scouting Combine.
That will most likely lead to the Giants adding a veteran passer in free agency and a rookie quarterback, potentially with one of the first three picks in the 2025 NFL Draft. The free agent crop of quarterbacks isn’t inspiring, but rumors of interest in Aaron Rodgers and Russell Wilson, among others, suggests that said rookie won’t be asked to start right away.
Instead, they could find themselves in competition with DeVito for the second spot on the depth chart.
DeVito entered the 2024 season as New York’s third quarterback. Despite his flashes in 2023, winning three games in a Jeremy Lin-esque rise to fame, the Giants opted for a more proven commodity to back up Jones, who had tore his ACL before DeVito’s debut.
He found 1,101 passing yards, eight touchdowns, and three interceptions in six games that ended almost as quickly as it began. For some, DeVito’s emergence was the highlight of a lost season, combining his feel-good story with his patented Italian celebration to distract oneself from the happenings of New York football. Others consider him a villain, the man that played just well enough to ensure Caleb Williams, Jayden Daniels, and Drake Maye would not be Giants.
Instead, their consolation prize was star receiver Malik Nabers. In 2024, DeVito got another chance to play after misfortune wrecked the room and found Nabers, but was far less successful in his sequel. He was 0-2 in the games he started, managing just 5.8 yards per attempt over 41 passes.
In 2025, DeVito will be tasked with earning his spot on the roster, with the likeliest outcome being the inactive emergency quarterback behind two prioritized passers. The Giants could very well add extra bodies to the room late in the offseason to test him during training camp and potentially improve the bottom of the roster.
