Quarterback Tommy DeVito is neither the New York Giants' present nor their future.
Veteran Russell Wilson will enter training camp as the Giants' undisputed starter, and 2025 first-round draft pick Jaxson Dart is the franchise's long-term project regarding the position. Thus, it makes sense that DeVito was asked while speaking with reporters on Wednesday if he can see himself still with the franchise come September.
"I mean, the plan has always been to be here, especially when I was a rookie," DeVito said, as shared by Paul Schwartz of the New York Post. "So, trying to continue that for as long as possible, and then we’ll see where it goes from there. But right now, I’m focused on being present and where I am and be where my feet are. So right now, I’m about to go enjoy this break and then come back for training camp, and then we’ll go from there."
DeVito became a fan favorite and an internet sensation when the New Jersey native won three of his first four career starts during his rookie campaign. However, the undrafted "Tommy Cutlets" more recently went 0-2 last season before the Giants completely restructured their quarterback room by acquiring Wilson, Dart and Jameis Winston earlier this offseason.
"I don’t want to say they’re 'older,' but Jameis (31 years old) and Russ (36) being a little bit older, and me (26) and Jaxson (22) being on the younger side, it’s a fun blend," DeVito said about those inside the Giants quarterback room as of the final day of spring. "They have wives, families, that whole thing. Me and Jax don’t."
Schwartz pointed out that DeVito may have to accept a spot on the Giants' practice squad to stay with the club beyond the preseason. That said, it's worth noting that general manager Joe Schoen shouldn't be in any rush to get rid of the only quarterback on the roster who has taken meaningful in-game snaps in the offense run by head coach Brian Daboll.
Wilson suffered what became a lingering calf injury last summer that kept him from playing until Week 7 of the 2024 season. Some think the New Orleans Saints may call the Giants about Winston, who played for the Saints from 2020 through the 2023 campaign, if rookie Tyler Shough doesn't look the part during upcoming exhibition contests.
DeVito may never again take a regular-season snap while wearing a Giants uniform, but such conversations can be punted down the road as of the start of the club's summer break.
