While it might not have been the most exciting Philadelphia Eagles offseason ever, the NFL Draft provided a spark in the form of more young talent that can make a difference in 2025.
While everyone talks about first-round pick Jihaad Campbell, others have their sights on second-round safety Andrew Mukuba. Bleacher Report writer Brent Sobleski likes Mukuba's potential to be just as exciting a rookie in 2025 as Jacksonville Jaguars versatile receiver and cornerback Travis Hunter.
"(Sydney) Brown has an incoming rookie competing to play free safety, with second-rounder Andrew Mukuba already drawing first-team snaps and rave reviews.
By catching the attention of proven veterans early in the process, a rookie can establish a level of comfortable that reflects on the field and allows them to play at a high level from the onset of their careers.
Mukuba thrives when the ball is front of him. As the safety sees the play develop, he quickly triggers. His five interceptions tied for the most in the SEC last season alongside Texas teammate Jahdae Barron, who took home the Jim Thorpe Award.
The 22-year-old flies up to stop the run as well. He's under 190 pounds, with some concerns over missed tackles, but the willingness is definitely present. These playmaking skills should be perfect working along the Eagles' back line."
Last year in Texas, Mukuba finished with 69 tackles, four tackles for loss, seven pass breakups, and one forced fumble in 15 games. The third-team All-SEC selection also had five interceptions on the year, tied for fifth in the nation.
Mukuba is not guaranteed to get significant playing time in 2025 as he first needs to beat out Sydney Brown and Tristin McCollum for the starting safety job alongside Reed Blankenship. With Brown's 2023 injury holding him back last year and McCollum not getting starting time, Mukuba could very well be in the running to start.
There are some areas Eagles defensive coordinator Vic Fangio will need to work on with Mukuba, including his tackling, but the building blocks are in place. Mukuba is a beast in the secondary in pass coverage as he can create turnovers on a dime.
The Eagles' most prominent position of concern going into training camp is safety, as it's unknown how Mukuba, Brown, or McCollum would do if they started. Brown and Mukuba split starting reps during offseason workouts.
Of the rookies the Eagles have on the roster, Mukuba has the best chance of making an immediate impact. The organization would like that too, as they have high expectations for him and need someone to step up and replace C.J. Gardner-Johnson.
Hunter can do his offensive and defensive plays all he wants, but Mukuba is going to master the safety position and become one of the best in the NFL.
