Travis Kelce recalls the Cowboys seeing ‘red flags’ in him at NFL Combine interview amid Caleb Williams saga
Michael Chow / USA TODAY NETWORK

The USC Trojans quarterback Caleb Williams is currently receiving a lot of criticism from fans and some experts due to his decisions during the NFL Combine. Amidst this, the Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce shared his story about the Dallas Cowboys seeing ‘red flags’ after his interview.

In a clip from The New Heights Show , the Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce recalled his poor performance during his interview with the Cowboys. Kelce revealed the Cowboys were pressing him about smoking weed during his college days. The old video is now being resurfaced on social media.

At the Combine, I had some bad interviews. The [Dallas] Cowboys were kind of pressing me about me having this red flag of missing a year and smoking weed. Travis Kelce said

The talented tight end further revealed that the meeting with the Cowboys finished within just 5 minutes. During the interview, Kelce basically told the Dallas-based football team to select someone else if they still had questions about him.

I basically just said, 'If you guys think I'm, you know, gonna be that kind of guy or you're questioning if I'm still that person after everything that I've kind of battled through to get to where I am now from missing a season, then you guys probably go somewhere else and pick somebody else,' and that is exactly what they did. It’s safe to assume Kelce did not leave a good impression on the Cowboys. During the 2013 NFL Draft, the Cowboys ended up selecting tight end Gavin Escobar out of San Diego State in the second round. Kelce ended up getting drafted by the Chiefs in the third round.

Escobar played his first years in Dallas and had some brief stints with the Baltimore Ravens, Cleveland Browns, Miami Dolphins, and even the Chiefs. He was out of the league in just 6 years. The old video of the Kelce story is now being resurfaced on social media amid criticism about Caleb Williams’ NFL Combine decisions.

Travis Kelce didn’t think the Chiefs were interested in him

Unlike his interview with the Cowboys, Travis Kelce had a decent interview with the Chiefs. However, he did not think the Kansas City-based football team was interested in him.

During a 2023 episode of The New Heights Show, Travis claimed that he thought the Chiefs were only talking to him since he was the brother of Jason Kelce. Travis further revealed, at the end of the interview, he didn’t feel like the Chiefs wanted to select him.

As it turned out, the Chiefs were looking for a tight end in that draft and selected Kelce in the third round. The future Hall of Famer has helped the Chiefs to win 3 Super Bowls and has had a remarkable career in the league so far.
