Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce experienced most people’s worst nightmares back in October when he arrived home after his team’s “Monday Night Football” win over the New Orleans Saints to find his house had been burglarized while he was away.
The break-in happened just hours after his teammate Patrick Mahomes had his Belton, Missouri, house, which is just 25 minutes away from Kelce’s Leawood, Kansas, home, burglarized as well.
Kelce lost more than $100,000 in jewelry, $20,000 in cash and his jerseys from his first Super Bowl, though police did recover his watch a few days later in Rhode Island. The experience left Kelce and his girlfriend Taylor Swift rattled, and the couple stayed in a Kansas City hotel after the incident not wanting to leave their safety up to chance.
TMZ Sports reported that Swift was on “high alert” after the break-in given her history with security issues over the summer when her “Eras Tour” shows in Austria were the alleged target of a terrorist attack, prompting her to cancel the concerts and beef up her security detail.
And with the NFL season winding down and Kelce and Swift spending more time at home because of the holidays, the All-Pro tight end spared no expense to put Swift at ease about feeling safe at his house, which is why one of his Christmas presents to her was going all-out to have a top-notch security system installed at his home.
“Travis has gone all out to make sure that the security system and security personnel at his home is invincible,” a source recently told the Daily Mail. “The best gift he could get both of them is safety and assurance that they will always have a good night's sleep.
...“Aside from a team of skilled security protecting the perimeter and surrounding grounds of his home 24/7, he has also installed a safety room in his renovations, which also include a man cave underground. He has installed a state-of-the-art security system with every single possible entry, including all windows, secured. The burglary was a huge wakeup call for them, and they will not spare any expense when it comes to their safety.”
Kelce and Mahomes aren’t the only NFL stars who were victimized by home invasions. Cincinnati Bengals QB Joe Burrow also had his house broken into last month while he was playing on “Monday Night Football” too.
The league is taking action to help protect its players, announcing during its recent winter meetings that NFL security is partnering with the FBI, which believes the recent burglaries are part of a large-scale organized crime ring, to try and prevent more players from becoming targets.
The NFL is urging players to take more security-related precautions including installing alarm systems, cameras and motion-sensor lights — advice that Kelce has taken to heart.
