Travis Kelce played in his fifth Super Bowl on Sunday as the Kansas City Chiefs faced off against the Philadelphia Eagles down in New Orleans. However, it wasn’t the outcome he or the team had hoped for, as they fell 40-22, bringing his career Super Bowl record to 3-2.
Losing a championship game is never easy, and emotions often run high. While Kelce wasn’t visibly in tears after the loss, NFL insider James Palmer heard from "a couple people" in the Chiefs organization say he was overcome with emotion the night before, shedding tears on Saturday ahead of the Super Bowl.
The night before last season’s Super Bowl, head coach Andy Reid had several star players, including Patrick Mahomes, Chris Jones, and Kelce, address the team to get them ready mentally. This year, while it’s unclear who else spoke, Kelce was among them, and that's when he got emotional.
“I contacted a couple people in the organization, Kay, Sunday morning, and I was just like, so I want to know about the speeches one, and they were like, well, Travis cried, but he cried last year," Palmer told Kay Adams on the "Up & Adams Show."

It’s unclear exactly what Kelce said or what made him so emotional. It’s possible the reality hit him that it would be the last time that exact group of teammates would play together. Even after 12 seasons with the Chiefs, rosters change, and players come and go.
Although Kelce cried last season, too, it's also possible he realized it could be the last time he would step on an NFL field. On Wednesday, he addressed the rumors that he might retire.
"I know everybody wants to know whether or not I'm playing next year, and right now, I'm just kicking everything down the road," Kelce said. "I'm kicking every can I can down the road. I'm not making any crazy decisions but right now, the biggest thing is just being there for my teammates and being there for my coaches, understanding that there's a lot that goes into this thing."
