Trent McDuffie Makes Statement After Sean McVay, Rams' Decision

Trent McDuffie is starting a new chapter with a Super Bowl-caliber roster, and he isn’t walking into it alone. The Los Angeles Rams sent multiple draft picks, including a first-rounder, to the Kansas City Chiefs back in March to land the cornerback, reuniting him with former teammate Jaylen Watson in the process. Sean McVay’s defense now runs through McDuffie, Myles Garrett and Aaron Donald, giving Los Angeles one of the more loaded units heading into the 2026 NFL season.

The Kansas City product entered the league as the Chiefs’ first-round pick, No. 21 overall, in the 2022 NFL Draft. He has started all 56 regular-season games he’s played since, piling up 246 tackles, 178 of them solo stops. The corner also has 34 passes defended, 15 pass breakups, 17 quarterback hits, 14 hurries, 31 total pressures, 12 tackles for loss, eight forced fumbles, 5.5 sacks and three interceptions across four seasons.

Four months in, the early returns suggest it’s been a smooth fit, and the Rams have already made that clear in how they’ve treated him heading into his first season with the franchise.

The Rams named McDuffie one of their team captains for 2026, putting him alongside Matthew Stafford, Kyren Williams, Tyler Higbee, Coleman Shelton, Davante Adams, Kobie Turner, Myles Garrett, Nate Landman, Quentin Lake and Joe Cardona.

It’s a fast turnaround for someone who’s only been with the organization since March, and it says plenty about how quickly he’s found his footing. Speaking with AP’s Rob Maaddi about the culture shift and the adjustments that came with it, the two-time Super Bowl winner opened up about what’s made the move work.

“I think, for me personally, what I always do is I put a lot on myself to be one of those guys that is just consistently at the top of this game, each and every day,” McDuffie said. “It can be hard when you go out there and play the Davante Adams, the Pukas [Nacua], Matthew Stafford’s back there slinging. I might not have a perfect day each and every day. But to be able to come in here and have a head coach like Sean McVay, who truly cares and has so much love for you, and it’s up there having 45 minute team meetings, talking ball, give me a little nugget here and there, like I’ve truly embraced this culture, and I feel like I’ve really flourished in what’s going to be part of being a Ram.”

Rams fans will get the first look at their new defensive star when they open the 2026 season on Sept. 10 against the San Francisco 49ers at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in Australia.
