I know most fans don’t blame a player for their injuries. A torn ACL in 2023 and knee problems since are part of the brutal reality of the NFL, but it wasn’t just that he was hurt. It was how things unfolded around those injuries.

We can look around on social media or just do a quick Google search and see that there were ongoing disagreements between Diggs and the Cowboys about rehab locations, playing style, and offseason participation.

I found that it was to the point where Dallas enforced a salary de-escalation clause because he didn’t reach the required percentage of offseason program participation.

That matters because when you’re one of the so-called leaders on defense, your presence in meetings and in workouts is not just about health. It’s about culture.

The Travel Incident That Didn’t Help

According to multiple sources, the final straw wasn’t one big dramatic explosion, it was a series of choices that kept adding up.

Most notably, after the Dallas Christmas Day win, Diggs reportedly chose to stay behind instead of flying back with the team after head coach Brian Schottenheimer denied his travel request.

This incident may seem small from a distance, but in the NFL, those moments matter to the team.

Teams want unity, they want everyone on the same page.

When a veteran with a massive contract starts making decisions that look like self-serving choices, the team is going to notice.

Especially, after making millions of dollars from that team.

Performance, Reputation, and the Cowboys’ Patience

I will be the first to say Diggs’ best football was memorable. He led the league in interceptions in 2021 and earned All-Pro honors.

Since then, game after game, it felt like the production wasn’t matching the investment.

All of us fans saw the declining number, fewer splash plays, and what looked like a player who was mentally checked out well before the Cowboys pulled the trigger.

The head coach himself said the decision came down to “an accumulation of multiple factors,” including performance.

We know that is a nice way of saying you’re not giving the team your all, and you’re not worth the headache.

Now With the Packers, But the Dallas Story Is Clear

I love that the Packers claimed Diggs off of waivers immediately after the Cowboys released him, giving him a chance to restart somewhere else.

All of us know that is how the league works. If a player still has talent, a contender will take the gamble.

But here is the truth that really stings for us Cowboys supporters:

Dallas didn’t cut Diggs because they suddenly needed cap space.

Dallas cut Trevon Diggs because they realized he wasn’t committed in the ways that matter most; effort, presence, and accountability.

You can thank injuries for the missed snaps, you can rationalize travel choices, you can debate how rehab locations and offseason schedules don’t matter.

At the end of the day, the Cowboys paid a premium for a difference-maker and ultimately got a locker room cancer instead.
