Trevor Lawrence reveals why he was not carted off after ankle injury

Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence suffered what appeared to be a very painful injury during Monday night’s loss to the Cincinnati Bengals, but he surprisingly was not carted to the locker room. We now know why.

Lawrence hurt his left ankle late in the fourth quarter when a teammate stepped on his foot as he was being taken to the ground by a defender. Fans were stunned that the Jaguars did not bring the cart out when it was obvious that Lawrence could barely put weight on his left leg.

A lot of people criticized the Jaguars for not using a cart. On Wednesday, Lawrence told reporters that it was his choice to walk. He said that may have been a mistake in hindsight.

“We talked about getting a cart and I was gonna get a cart,” Lawrence explained. “Then I’m standing there, and I’m already on the sideline at that point. The tunnel’s right there. I just wanted to get off the field and get out of there. I didn’t know what was going on with my ankle. I felt like I could get off. I was like, ‘Hey, you’re good. Just don’t bring it out. I’m going in.’

“Once I got in there I’m like, ‘This is a pretty long walk.’ I was already there and they asked again if I wanted a cart. I was like, ‘No, we’re gonna make it the whole way there.’ I didn’t know there was cameras in the tunnel.”

Lawrence praised the Jaguars’ medical staff and laughed off any assumptions that the team would refuse to bring out a cart for him.

The Jaguars said this week that there was no structural damage to Lawrence’s ankle. Still, he has a high-ankle sprain, which is sometimes a multi-week injury. It is unclear if he will play on Sunday against the Cleveland Browns.
